Single fin grill installed on silver SL (pics)

Pulled the trigger on the new single fin grill from the eBay seller of a prevoius thread. The grill arrived in 2 days!! Super fast shipping to So Cal. Packed very well - quality is better than I expected for $193 total. Install was about 5 minutes including mounting the star. Star emblem is about 1" larger diameter than stock. I think it gives the front a fresh look and blends in very well with the black mesh already there. This was the "Black" grill. I think there are 4 different choices. See what you think on Irid Silver...

Generally nice but something is just not right about the angle of the horizontal bar. Joins the emblem a bit too low in the center, maybe.

Thx for the ics on a silver sl...been waiting. I agree with pthers..it looks ok, but somerhing just seems not right IMO for my taste. I dont know if its the symbol, too shiny for the front including the blk plastic on it..so it stands out more than just blending and complimenting the car. I think i will gofo a 3 slat OEM, IF i ecen change it. Thx again for the pics :) I think maybe better with chrome wheels or the chrome fog light trim..dunno

looks good, i like mine on my mars red

Thanks for the comments. I debated weather to get the "sliver" grill then paint the mesh areas black. I think this would have given the fin more of a lifted look. Where the fin extends off the mesh, the spacing top to bottom is pretty uniform. The way the fin projects out at the center toward the star makes the fin look a little dropped, especially with the chrome at the outer edge. Would be interesting to see what the all silver grill would look like.

I think it looks good. For the price it's a different look and a bargin. Thx for sharing the pics....

I like it as well...
I was worried about the quality on ebay..
What seller did you purchase from???

His eBay user ID is "jauko". Do a eBay search for: Mercedes SL500 grill. You'll see his listings usually grouped together.

I just ordered one but am going to have the plastic "grill" material in the background removed and replaced with actual aluminum mesh to match my lower valance which has been replaced as such...

install instructions

how does the star affix to the plastic cant seem to figure it out? thanks

BindySL 10-16-2009 09:25 PM

There are tabs on the back of the star that aligns with slots on the grill. Just press them in and they will "snap" in place. I did have to trim a little plastic flash from one slot - I didn't want to force it.

Have mine stripped down......removed all chrome and flat round black piece behind the star.......painting same pewter colour as my car.....putting ss mesh behind star and putting chrome strips back on........should be finished by the weekend.......

NEMES1S 10-21-2009 01:11 AM

amgfan, what did you do to get the black headlights? the car is still amazing

Suvneer 10-21-2009 02:11 PM

I installed this grille after I installed the CF lip. The grille and the lip color matches perfectly.

Please post some pictures when you get it installed. I like the idea of opening up the area behind the star - similar to the OEM design. I'm sure with the new design there is a small flow-thru air loss to the radiator. Probabaly not a big deal except to the far-south brothern in the summer time :v:

ArubaAmg 05-13-2011 04:41 PM

Has anyone installed these with "distronic" cruise control? I know the ones with the solid background behind the star are supposed to work but not sure how it would install...
