No silicone really needed. If you take your time, it comes off and there is no residue. All that's needed is a little patience.

The silicone acts a both a mild solvent and a lubricant. Keeps you from scratching anything.

I pulled hard and the radio knob came off. I used toothpaste on an old white sports sock for the face and for the sides I enlisted the services of an old electric toothbrush. The knob came up shiny black and smelled good too !
