I'm excited for this project. Do you plan on changing the wheels too? These feel like a downgrade to me from stock. It'd be sick for some 20" deep concave wheels!

Maybe you'll do a full black series widebody conversion?

I'm in for this project!

I don't remember if I asked in your other thread, but what camera/lens(es) do you use?

Stock??? That is the most boring wheel ever. A R230 looks absolutelly the best with deep dish in rear. Car came with these wheels and I think they looked really good compared to stock.

Concave wheels dont work on a R230. Looks a bit boring to me and not deep.

No black series for me. I think it looks like a kit car and is not good looking in rear. Front is OK but rear looks horrible.

Nikon D5000 with wideangle 18-105 VR and a polaroid filter.

Im ready for this one... Im expecting this to be another CRAZY project.

xxGenericSNxx 09-03-2012 04:51 PM

Well as long as you're happy. I know stock bores some people but these are "cheap" wheels. So to me it doesn't do an SL justice, let alone a 65.

Chris The Swede 09-03-2012 06:34 PM

They cost more than stocks over here..And Badly enough stocks have VERY poor qualitty. Always problem with them.

First little mod...A fresh steering wheel. Some metal paddles will go on there later.

xxGenericSNxx 09-03-2012 07:22 PM

Can you show me the AMG you have on the ashtray? Do you have any more info on that?

Sports steering wheel looks really nice! Who makes it?

Chris The Swede 09-03-2012 07:25 PM

You got PM..

It looks exactly like OEM steering wheel used in 2006-09 CLS550 sport and CLS55/63 AMG and 2007-09 E350/550 sport and E63 AMG. If so, it is OEM part number A21946016039E37. This steering wheel does fit all SL models from 2003 thru 2007 and CLK (2007-09). Of course it also could be an identical looking CLK "version(s)" - A20946034039E37 or A20946019039E37, which also do fit all four - E, CLS, SL and CLK (there are so many different part numbers that all look the same).

The least expensive place I know of getting them from is eBay's "Age Styling" a.k.a. "paramount styling" located in Europe. MSRP is about $2,500. Parts.com sells them at a nice discount, but eBay's seller mentioned above sells them (brand new) for 3 times less!!!

Here it is (OEM) in 2009 E class sport:

Chris The Swede 09-04-2012 03:03 AM

Well almost true...Importent to mention is that the paddle shifter mounting holes are different.

xxGenericSNxx 09-04-2012 03:25 AM

Thanks for the very thorough reply threeMBs. And thanks Chris for the PM.

Hey great job on the S class project. Just curious as to what you will be upgrading the tailights to?

Chris The Swede 09-06-2012 04:49 AM

91RS 09-09-2012 12:18 PM

I see your car doesn't have Keyless Go (who the hell would order a SL65 without every option??!!), will you be retrofitting that? That's one feature I would really love to put on my C55 if it were possible.

platinumsc 09-09-2012 02:48 PM

I really like this Mandrus wheel. I would have painted the charcoal part black though.

AmmarYasirA 09-09-2012 04:29 PM

AHHHH!!! how hard was the HD command unit retrofit?? really looking into doing this!

Chris The Swede 09-09-2012 07:10 PM

I dont think it was hard at all.For me it was pretty straight forward. But that is so much up to each and one how hard you think something is...

AmmarYasirA 09-09-2012 08:29 PM

was it plug n play or was there alot of special wiring to do?

Chris The Swede 09-09-2012 09:02 PM

You need adapter cable kit and some pin moving.
