I have what I assume is an unusual problem. There is an annoying thumping sound when the car moves or stops. I can make it happen by just pushing forward and backward on the car even when stopped. The MB dealer has identified it as a loose baffling in the gas tank. Makes sense. Their answer is to replace the gas tank at about $2500. Anybody have a much simpler and cheaper answer?

i had same problem on my old 2005 SL55.. they took out the tank, is big job, need take off the roof . we cut it open,and welded it solid,and put it back in.. is alot of work in and out . can be good idea have good welders do that job, and have a good mecanic take out and in again. make shure pressure test the Tank and make shure no micro holes..

Yes, there is a DIY fix. Search the 230 amg section.

Thanks for the responses. So far I like the spring down the gas fill pipe approach given difficulty and cost of tank removal. I may check to see if someone has a camera fiber tube or probe (besides my proctologist) that may help to see what the situation is. Anything that might spark, though, seems ill advised.
