2004 sl600 ESP Brake Brake Malfunction
I just got a 2004 Sl600 with 40k miles on it. Suddenly my ESP light came on with my Brake light on the MPH dial and on the RPM dial, it says Brake Malfunction! Stop Vehichle! and the ABS light comes on. I supposedly have a bumper to bumper warranty on it, that the previous owner paid $6200 for it.
Mechanic is saying I need $1600 repair ($1200 for parts), and Mercedes wants $2800.
There has to be a place I can get the parts cheaper.
Any ideas?

you can get the codes with a STAR tool (it is what the dealer uses and you can buy a clone of from places like Alibaba). the cheapest place to find parts I have found is mbdirectparts.com. The SBC brake unit is no longer available new, only rebuilt from Mercedes. I bought one from mbdirectparts around a year ago for about $800. It take about 2 hours to install and then you have to bleed the brakes (which is more labor time). To properly and completely bleed the brakes you need the STAR tool as well as a Motive brake bleeder. You can get most of the fluid out without using the STAR tool, but like I said the only way to get everything out and to properly do the job you need a STAR.
I would suggest getting the codes read before replacing the unit as it could be something else. It is rare that the SBC unit randomly goes bad while driving. Usually they will get to the end of their service life (300,000 brake actuations) before needing replaced. When you are nearing the 300k number a blue service brake system light will come on for awhile until you finally reach the 300k number and then the red service brake light comes on. Every time you push the brake pedal or the traction control engages counts towards that 300k number. Usually people go 80k-120k miles before reaching the end of the service life.
If you think that repair quote is bad, wait till your motor mounts go bad. On the v12 the entire engine has to be removed to replace them and it is 20-25 hours of labor.

The warranty is supposed to cover anti-lock brake system, electronic control unit and hydrsulic unit under the braking system. Shouldnt that cover the sensotronic brake hydraulic unit?

it should, but you may have to fight them some on it. As stated above the cheapest place to buy the SBC unit is MBdirectparts.com and it will be around $800.
