SL/R230: Keyless Go Key Replacement

Keyless Go Key Replacement
Hi,
I recently bought a 2007 SL550. It's in great condition but the dealer I bought it from (not a MB dealer) only had one key. I went to my local MB dealer and purchased a new keyless go key. The key cost about $370, which I expected.
Once the key came in, I took the car back to the dealer to pick up the key. The key was ordered using the VIN #. It works to unlock the doors, open the trunk, and start the car IF you insert the key. BUT the keyless starting doesn't work.
I've gotten a couple of different stories from the service department. The latest, and the one that makes the most sense to me, is the key needs to be programed by the MB dealer in order to work with my car. The dealer say's the programming charge will be another $250.
My question is: is this normal procedure for MB dealers? Maybe I'm wrong but I assumed when I bought a brand new key for $370 that it would actually work. Now it seems like they are saying, "Oh, did you want a key that works? Well, that will be another $250 please." (Actually they didn't even say please).
Thanks,
Jon

There is a programming procedure for KeylessGo keys. $250 for this is highway robbery, though. Here's some more info on this:
