722.643 Tranny

Hello every one,

The other day shortly after accelerating my rpms shot up like I had thrown it in neutral then it engaged again and would not go past 2nd gear. I turned car of then back on and drove a few miles then completely lost the ability to accelerate again , as if car was in neutral. I think maybe its the tranny fluid pump going bad or not getting any oil so its dry? or possibly the filter came loose some how? I say this because at one point I remember losing engagement jus before a turn then as I made the turn it drove like normal through the turn then lost engagement again after turn was complete, this happened about 2 or three times, so I think its fluid related or maybe just a coincidence. I checked my fluid level and it was fine. any thoughts??

****edit... turns out it was just a dirty 13pin connector yaaay!! Thanks for all the help guys!***

It does sound like a fluid problem, but it also could be a valve issue. Have you pulled codes form the TCU?

iCarsoft i980 and iCarsoft MB-II can read the TCU codes - get them on Amazon for $120-$150. It might be worth having a tool that can read and clean MBZ codes. If not, find a friend with SDS or iCarsoft that can scan for you. Those P codes just mean there is a fault. Sometimes the conductor plates fail and cause problems like this and that's a far cheaper and easier repair than replacing the whole transmission. Even if the valve body need replacement, that's cheaper. And really, I might consider a rebuild instead of a whole new gearbox. There's some really good videos on this. I did a partial rebuild on a 722.9 (fluid pump and some drum bearings) and it wasn't too bad.

Tranny

Thanks a ton! I have actually been considering buying the icarsoft MBii. Do you know which one does more? I actually was contemplating having mine rebuilt, but if one of those tools can tell me what is wrong and it turns out to just be a solenoid, valve body or conductor plate and thus no tranny removal, it would be well worth it's weight in gold! Great advice and thanks!

I uses SDS myself, but I think MBII is the better of the two iCarsoft units.

Get Thee To An Indy

If you want to sell your car soon, by all means look into a salvage replacement. But there are costs that go with that. The TCU must be married to the trans and vice versa. That will all be done at install time with a full flush.
You need to post in the AMG forum section here.
IF you plan on keeping the car a full rebuild will cost you upfront but will last the cars life. A performance rebuild with HD clutches and a reworked valve body will make your car a true killer
You can put a used unit in it for $2-3k. (You need an AMG .6 not just a NA 5 speed and the TCU has to be married along with pulling out the old and flushing an unknown used unit and flashing it to work with your car) then worry if the valve body and TCU plate could die quickly after install also

You really need find an Indy repair shop and have them do a full diagnostic on you car.
Who knows? It may only need a new TCU plate and/or valve body which is actually less costly than a trans swap and make your car the highest scale of reliability available
It all depends on how messed up your car really is
Good Luck

Hary

On the 722.6, the TCU is external from the transmission. It's located in the passenger side floor board area. It also does not require SCN coding, so other than adaptation coding, it can be swapped easily. This is unlike the 722.9 where the TCU is integrated into the anti-theft system which requires SCN coding, and is located in the conductor plate, internal to the trans mission. By far, the 722.6 is much easier to swap.

Update problem fixed!

So great news guys! Was an easy fix. 13pin as others suggested!!! So glad it wasn't the tranny. Sorry for the delayed reply. Was just reminded by a potential buyer of my car.
