SL/R230: Why do some R230's have black roof?

Why do some R230's have black roof?
I'm considering an SL to replace my SLK, and I've looked at many listings where a silver car has a mostly black roof. Can someone please explain this?

I agree the black glass looks a bit out of place on a silver car. When I was shopping for my SL, I did not care if it had the sunroof or not. I seemed to find more cars with the sunroof than without. The car I finally bought did not have the roof. If you found he perfect car and it has the sunroof, I'd say buy it. If you absolutely can't stand it, then see if you can arrange a swap with someone who has a solid roof and wants the glass version. Or, buy a solid one an eBay and sell yours and pocket the difference.

I have the pano roof and love it...though my shade somehow came off the slider track and I cannot figure out how to put it back on. It gets hot in San Diego so it can be a bummer.

The Pano roof on our Iridium Silver SL500 is woooonderful; especially as the climate here encourages instant, grateful appreciation of any and all appearances of the Sun!
I (naturally, perhaps) prefer the look of the car with a 'contrasting colour' for the roof.
Our previous Merc. was a Fire Opal (Mars Red in the States) SLK350 (do NOT buy one in that colour before you read the 'Paint Issues' section etc. on the SLK Forum) and it too had a Pano. roof. However, there was no roof/screen/blind (they should be compulsory..)! and so sdwtchlvr (previous poster) has my heartfelt sympathy because on the (very!) occasional sunny days, even here the air-con was hard pressed to cope.
Our SLK320 was great fun but eventually suffered a degree of 'iron worm infestation'. The SL is a very different proposition and during the five months of our ownership has proved to be the easiest drive of any car in the family history. Love it!!

i needed the pano roof as it provides more headroom since there is no headliner
