2004 SL55 AMG - Teleaid control module

Can anyone tell me where the Teleaid control module is physically located on a 2004 SL55 AMG? I recently had the SRS and SOS lights come on, and all audio from the Comand system stop. My local dealership has diagnosed the problem, and recommends replacing the Teleaid control module, but they want an enormous amount to do it.

Welcome to the forum! Please take a moment to visit the User Control Panel and update your profile to include your car model and year, and your location (at least country). This information will then appear below your name and avatar on the left side panel next to each post you make. This will greatly help others to give you better information.

Don't bother replacing it. It's too expensive and useless since MY2004 TeleAid still used the old now-defunct analog cellular network. You can remove the unit and use couplers to keep the fiber loop intact, but you'll still get error message. You can get the car reprogrammed to remove the TeleAid option and fix that. It requires SDS, so either a dealer, good indy, or even a nearby forum member with that tool.

Thanks, I'll get my profile updated. I recently purchased my first MB, a 2004 SL55 AMG. It has been sitting in a garage for three years, untouched. So, I am working through some kinks. Do you know where this module is physically located in the car, and how to get to it? I believe it is behind the rear interior panels, but I am having trouble figuring out how to remove them?

The module is located beneath the rear cubby on the drivers side. To access it requires removing the the rectangle panel in front of the drivers side rear cubby (That one is compression fitted with no screws), the drivers side rear cubby, (That is held on by 4 bolts, 2 bolts that you'll see when you remove the front rectangular panel, and two at the rear of the cubby) the drivers rear side panel (You'll have to first remove the aluminum cover on the door sill, then if memory serves, there are two bolts holding the side panel), and the rear center console cover (If you unbolt the rear bolt on the center console, you should be able to lift it sufficiently to get to the bolts for the rear center console section).

On the floor in brackets you'll find the teleaid module, some antenna modules. After removing the Teleaid module, you'll need to get a fiber optic loop connector to complete the fiber optic loop that you've just disrupted by taking the Teleaid module out of the loop.

Thank you for the detailed info! The CD changer is in the drivers side rear cubby, does that need to come out separately or can it stay in the cubby?

Perhaps the Tele Aid module location varies between models and/or years. On the 2004 SL500 I owned it was located between the rear storage compartments. That is also the location given by Meredes Star Finder (attachment).

The TeleAid is part of the SRS system. When the airbags are deployed, or the vehicle senses a rollover, the Teleaid is meant to place an automated distress call noting the accident and cars position so that emergency services can be dispatched without haste. Upon every start, the system checks all SRS system components, including TeleAid and if it receives either an error, or no response at all, the SRS light get's illuminated. So after removing the Teleaid module, you have to disable it via SDS so the SRS system stops checking to see if it's responding.

As already noted, replacement of the TeleAid module is pointless since the old analog system has been defunct for over a decade. The module is known to fail and when it does, it'll repeatedly try to make emergency calls on it's own over and over again resulting in a dead consumer battery and you scratching your head about what keeps depleting your battery overnight.
