AGM Glass Mat Battery
Does anyone have experience using a glass mat battery as consumer battery on R230?
They apparently hold charge much better.

They need the glass mat battery. They have a lot of consumers coming on while the engine is not running. A normal battery would throw "convenience features not available" especially during the winter and if you take it back to the vendor (Sears) it will show on their testers as good. Ask me how I know.

The starter battery is actually a wet cell lead acid. It's one of the few batteries on the market still where you can refill the electrolyte. If you take a look at it, you'll see the screw caps on top. And when you shake the battery, you can hear the electrolyte sloshing around.

Aussiesuede is right, the starter battery is a traditional type. I replaced it with a motorcycle battery of the same size for $20 and it has been running like a champ for 7 years.

The starter/front battery is a traditional "wet" lead acid battery. I suppose someone could make an AGM battery of the proper size, but there's really no need for that. Being used jsut to operate the starter, the advantages of AGM would be wasted.

Someone on a German R230 forum aired the opinion that having a lead/acid battery inside your passenger compartment or trunk poses a safety + technical risk, in case of an accident. Guess he has a point there (although many cars used to have just that setup).
