Welcome to the forum!

There is a plastic pawl inside the shift mechanism that breaks. You can get an aftermarket metal pawl on replace it, but it requires removing the shifter. And to do that, it has to be in neutral, so it's a bit of a "Catch-22" - you need to repair it to shift from park, but you must shift from park to repair it. So, the solution is start the engine, put your foot on the brake pedal, and then force the shifter out of park. Some members have used a rubber mallet or hammer with a block of wood. yes, this will break the parts for the interlock, but they are broken anyhow. If you search the forum for "stuck in park", you'll likely find many threads on this with the solution.

There's a lock ring under the leather boot. To access it, pull the bezel around the base of the boot off the wood center console panel, then invert to boot and you'll see the lock rung. Turn it (I can't recall the direction - maybe clockwise?) and once it's release, just pull up on the knob (it can be hard, but just pull).

Thumbs up gear shifter

Hi Many thanks again, Do you also know if the shift mechanism can be removed from under the car in order to replace the faulty part or does the centre consul have to come out as this seems to be all one piece including the dashboard !

You will need to get underneath the car to detach the linkage rod from the selector, but selector is removed from the top for the repair. You don't need to remove anything but the top wooden panel on the console. To do that, you pop the side panels off the console and then remove the bolts (six, IIRC) holding the wooden panel in place and lift it off. Once you do that, you can access the bolts for the selector.

Chryslers of the time have this problem too...

But it's an easy repair? Why is it so hard here?
