Mobil 1 Formula M 5W40

I’m looking at the local Mobil1 retailers around zip 14304 and I don’t see any stock of this specific grade.
Does it have to be pre-ordered?
I’ll be there next week and I could pickup some if the price is right.
All suggestion are appreciated.

Your best price is to order online with free delivery. That's what's recommended and I use on my '08 SL55 AMG, or you can get the same 5w40 MB branded at the dealer.

The specifications for Mobil 1 0W40 are better than the 5W40. I believe It meets the specs for the newest German cars. I've been using it in the SL55 and the Audi A8 for several years.

Here's a full list of approved oils:

I find Mobil 1 0w40 European Formula and Castrol Edge 0w40 to be readily available at local auto parts stores and Walmart.

Thanks guys,
You are absolutely correct about the 0w40. Even my local Costco got the Castrol in stock and on sale from time to time.
The reason I was looking for the 5w40 Mobil1 was the the fact that’s what was used in the car so far and that’s what my local MB dealer uses as well.
Dealer invoices are $30+ for a litre of this oil while big box down the street charges about the same for the 5 litre jug of 0w40 when on sale.
Will I benefit from 5w? I don’t know. It’s the difference worthy the $300 price tag (taxes in) for the oil alone? I don’t know that either.
I guess I have the weekend to research the subject some more.

I saw the same thing in my R230's VMI report - looks like it was a dealer go-to at some point and perhaps anything in current inventory is just leftover stock.

At this stage, the only Mobil 1 product I'd use in a Mercedes is their 0W-40. A 5W (cold viscosity) option will quiet down the valvetrain, but at the cost of reaching critical components less quickly at engine startup.

If you live in a warm climate or store the car for winter in a cold one, 5W-40 is fine. Year round, however, 0W-40 is optimal IMHO.

The aforementioned 0W-40 oils (Mobil 1 and Castrol Edge) are excellent options. A couple 5W-40 oils of comparable quality are Shell Rotella T6 and Liqui Moly Leichtlauf.

The Mobil 1 you get at most places is not Formula M, the Mercedes-approved oil. I think using Formula M is more important than the difference between 5W-40 and 0W-40. Very few places (besides dealers) carry Formula M, but you can get it online.

I couldn't resist.

29 bucks for the 5 quarts jug at the local big box. Yes I'll take two.
And then some other staff from another supplier

I was glad to see all filters and oil in good condition.

It drained 8 liters by opening the oil pan drain and took 8.5l to achieve correct level after refill.
