Hi - my SL55 failed its MOT (inspection) today due to some play in the suspension bushes. The actual bush is on the bottom of the front air spring I've circled in in red.
Im shocked to hear Mercedes dont sell this bush. I also called Arnott and they wont sell the bushing they press into their units. I only have play on one side but clearly I don't want to replace just one bush. I don't think I can replace with a single Arnott spring but I could be wrong about that.
Does anyone know if this bush can be replaced or if the air spring(s) need replaced as a unit.
1) It may be possible to fit a BMW(!) ball joint into the strut. Further checks to be done on this but maybe possible if not advisable
2) SL350 strut is much cheaper and the ball joint could be cut out from the new unit and pressed into the old strut.
3) It is possible to replace the front ABC spring with a single Arnott unit. However I've been advised against it by an Indy as he's had problems with Arnott ABC struts (not air suspension) before.
I'm now considering those ebay strutt rebuild services to see if they have ball joints or could offer a strut repair service.
