SL/R230: Strange ckicking/relay chatter

Strange ckicking/relay chatter

Today when I went into the garage I heard a sporadic ticking noise much like a relay chattering.. I opened the hood and it is not coming from either relay center but rather underneath the wiper plastic cover--I think. It is not that noticeable inside the car. When I start it up the clicking stops. When I shut it off It will click for 10 about second's and then stop and then start up again. Everything seems to work just fine. Has anyone experienced this?

Is your heater working? It's a possibility that your heater control valve solenoid is failing. It's the valve which diverts coolant to the heater core and it's located under the windshield wiper cowl where you describe the sound coming from.

Very interesting ! Would that valve have power with the ignition off?

Yes, The "Rest" function of the climate control allows the vehicle heat to circulate after the vehicle has been turned off and the key removed from the ignition (for about 15 minutes) after which the heater solenoid valve will close. Even when not using the "Rest" function, the heater solenoid doesn't close for a couple of minutes or so, after the key is removed.

Now I feel like an idiot Today I had some time to get to the bottom of this clicking since sooner or later something was going to fail.I disconnected the rear battery and the clicking continued. Then I disconnected the starting battery and the clicking continued--WTF how is that possible? Then I realized that the clicking was actually coming from my garage opener and the noise was telegraphing down to my car in the cowl area. Actually that is a relief since openers are dirt cheap compared to SL parts.

Best case scenario is always when there is nothing wrong at all!

We’ve all been there chasing gremlins. You know blind alleys, false positives, two problems posing as one, etc.

No code readers or even Star xntry could have diagnosed it but you did! Celebrate!
