I could not open the trunk with the car running but everythng unlocked.

So today I backed the SL out of the garage for some sun and to charge the batteries since it has been sitting for a week due to the instrument cluster being out for repair. As I left the car with the engine running, I could not open the trunk. It tried unlocking everything and even tried the button on the door and fob to no avail. I was able too open it when I shut the car off.

Is this normal? And if not what could be the culprit. Would the fact that the cluster was not installed have something to do with it?

I still don't see the SL owner's manual online, but you may have separate locking turned on. Just thinking out loud. Admittedly, I have never played with this in my car, so not exactly sure what the behavior is, and the SL may be different, but I have this switched off in my C63S coupe and I can open the trunk when the engine is running.

The cluster is on both the CAN-B and the CAN-C networks. Mercedes is not very forthcoming on how everything works, but my guess is that it receives speed inputs from CAN-C, calculates vehicle speed, and then sends this info on CAN-B to the modules that need it. For example the roof will not operate above a certain speed and the same is true with the trunk release. With the cluster out, there is no speed signal so it doesn't open.
