Rusty wheels/rotors

Hello everyone,

I'm looking to buy a CPO SL550. One of the cars I'm looking at has rust on the wheels/rotors. I'm wondering if this is an indicator of bigger issues with the car. Has anyone had issues with rust on their wheels? Is it fairly easy to clean them up? The car looks clean otherwise.

Picture below:

It's most probably just surface rust from the car not being driven. I'd bet that if you drove it around the block, stepping on the brakes, a few times, all that rust would disappear. Besides, if not, it's still under warranty.

The rust om rotors is no issue. It will disappear in a minute when driving but i am surprised of the dried-on rust residue inside the wheel and the corroded brake calipers. That is unusual.

I would inspect the chassis

Occurs on mine after a really good wash / wheel cleaning. Brake applied a couple of times, rust is gone. Shoulda gone carbon!

Yeah I see rust on the rotors of my current vehicle, not too concerned about that. But the inside of the wheel and brakes look suspicious.

Are you talking rotors only, or the inside of the wheel as well like in the picture?

My comment is related to rotors only. Rust on the caliper / rotor hat would be from some other influence. Now that I look closer at the photo, there also appears to be rust on the wheel? Very odd. I would agree with WM that a chassis inspection would be prudent. Also might see if you can get service records on the vehicle.

Thanks for the input guys. I think I'll pass on this one and keep looking. The car is several states away, probably not worth the potential problems.

CPO means that the car is still under warranty. MB should have found and fixed anything that you can find, before they even put the car up for sale. That in and of itself seems strange. Talk to them, to see if they'd be willing to fix all your issues and answer any questions you may have. They're not in the business of trying to screw over their potential customers. I'd at least give them a try to make things right.

One of the sales guys told me it's still in the process of being certified. I asked if they can clean up the wheels and he said no problem. I'm waiting to see pictures after they fix the issue.
