In many vehicles, "screen-based functions" are performed with some sort of controller. BMW had the iDrive system with hand controller for YEARS and finally for '18 has added touchscreen capability. That's the way the world is moving; most mid-level laptops now have touchscreens in addition to keyboards. The iPad is ubiquitous. I'm typing on a hybrid laptop with detachable screen/tablet. Our '14 Murano has both.
If you don't like the "grubbiness" of the screen after touching it, just use the controller. I find it useful to have BOTH functions available, especially if the passenger wants to access something on the screen. Rather than having to use their left hand to operated the controller, they can just touch the screen.

The iPad design on the dashboard is probably the most hated feature in car designs these days, perhaps apart from Run Flats. Don't like it either but it makes ergonomic sense.
When it comes to roadsters though I am old school. Don't want a lot of screens in a top down two seater. While the command is somewhat outdated, I am using Apple CarPlay with more accurate mapping and Siri for voice control that actually works. Technically, all in-car navigation and infotainment systems are inferior to a iPhone or Android phone anyway...
