New '18 SL550 owner
Greetings all. I am a new owner of a 2018 SL550. Took possession last Wednesday. This is my first Mercedes. I am coming from a '14 BMW 650i convertble. So far, I am extremely happy with the handling and ride of this beautiful machine. Polar White with the beige & brown interior.

The SL550 handles better than my previous ‘09 BMW 335i convertible and is faster and smoother than the 650i I traded in. It took the best of both and combined them.

Thank you. I love it. There are few control things I'm getting used to related to the electronics that feel like a step back from the BMW's I've owned, like the auto start/stop not remembering you had it turned off the last time you drove it and how you mute the navigation voice. Other than these few things, the car handles great and the ride is so smooth. My wife went for her first long ride in it yesterday and she loves the smooth ride. It got a lot of looks from people at the valet last night when we left the restaurant.

Only thing I see wrong is you haven't posted enough pics!!
What a beauty. Enjoy the heck out of your new ride. Pretty soon the controls will be second nature. While the navigation is speaking, turn the
volume down to the level you want it. At least that's how you used to lower it.

we had to ask the dealer as we could find no setting anywhere that adjusted it

The SL is my wifes car - i was a bit pissed that for a 1 year old car........... it doesnt have touch screen etc........ even cheap Fords have a better interface for the stereo's
It drives great, and is pretty quick though

"auto start/stop not remembering you had it turned off the last time you drove it>>>
Many of the 2018 BMWs, for sure on the X3, no longer remember the last setting. You have to disable it every time the engine is started and it apparently can't be "coded" to remember the last setting. EPA is getting the blame but I can't verify that.

That's good to read because I've seen the opposite in many "owner posts" that are out there.

Start stop is is disabled in S+. The last setting you used e.g. S+ is remembered for 4 hours after you switch off which, helps a little. The only problem is that the only time I use S+ is when I take a "quiet" Sunday morning drive .
I imagine that some combination of settings in "I" mode would be able to take advantage of this but I've not tried it yet.
Given that S+ is the most unforgiving mode in terms of driver assistance, I tend only to use it when I am driving to enjoy the performance on our twisty country roads rather, than doing a long drive somewhere.

I find this a most annoying method to set the volume as my wife constantly turns the volume to zero when it starts talking, Like most women she cant just turn it down a little rather she turns it off, I then need to remember to make it talk again so I can turn the volume back up or miss my turn.
Not sure if this is a vehicle design problem or a wife problem????????

In many vehicles, "screen-based functions" are performed with some sort of controller. BMW had the iDrive system with hand controller for YEARS and finally for '18 has added touchscreen capability. That's the way the world is moving; most mid-level laptops now have touchscreens in addition to keyboards. The iPad is ubiquitous. I'm typing on a hybrid laptop with detachable screen/tablet. Our '14 Murano has both.
If you don't like the "grubbiness" of the screen after touching it, just use the controller. I find it useful to have BOTH functions available, especially if the passenger wants to access something on the screen. Rather than having to use their left hand to operate the controller, they can just touch the screen.
