I decided to bit the bullet and go for the Stage 1 tune using 93 octane fuel. I sent the ECU out Monday. We already received notice that it's headed back. That is quick work! I promised my wife when we traded her beloved CLS63 on the SL550 that we would be able to surpass the power of the CLS. If we realize anything close to the power listed on the oetuning website, Mama is going to be a very happy girl. Stay tuned (sorry!) for an update as soon as we get the ECU back and installed.

Got the ECU back by mid-day. Took all of about 5 minutes to reinstall. Unfortunately family/holiday obligations prohibited anything but a quick 15 minute drive. First impressions are that throttle response is massively improved and it pulls much harder through the gears. Driving around suburban streets precludes anything more than short bursts, so a more in-depth test drive will have to wait until the weekend when I can get to the Interstate. So far I'm impressed with how fast the turn-around time was. Also how the tune has improved response to throttle inputs without turning it into an on-off switch, an issue I've experienced with a S600 tuned by another firm.
I can't wait for more drive time!
