SL450 Trunk Space - Info Request

Have a Euro Delivery set up for late June for SL450 - new to MB cars - and looking forward to it. What is a realistic trunk load out plan in terms of bags for my wife and I on our Euro travels? Can we put in two rollers and a hang up back - will that fit? Is the space increased if you leave the top up?

Thanks for any help
Ross

I personally would drive to a local MB dealership and take a look into a SL450 on the lot and take a tape measure.

Thanks Utopia - tape measure to dealer sure - plan too - Was looking more for how people best use the available space - how useful was rear shelf bag, any tricks to loading and maximizing rollers in trunk, spaces for thin hang up bag, etc. Cheers

We often rent SL's for trips in Europe but we travel light. Don't check bags; have had too many lost/mis-routed. So a couple carry-on bags (Tumi) plus 1 backpack or two are no issue. More fits into the trunk with the top up. For more space, the trunk divider can be removed but then you would have to leave that behind. Depending of how tall you are, there will be no space for a rear shelf bag or just a thin one.
As convertibles go, though, the SL has a large usable trunk.

If you're concerned about how much the trunk will hold, don't take a rollerboard. Instead, take soft sided luggage, that can conform to the non-square trunk space.

Yes - one large roller (with softer stuff packed around it) or two small units but as suggested best to go and measure. Someone somewhere also suggested two small soft bags that can go behind the seats on top of the fuse box (RHS) and storage box (LHS). There is a crowd that does some custom luggage but it is expensive (about Euro 800-00 for the set).

Don't forget, there's a little extra space under the deck! Just lift it up and there's some extra space under the bottom panel in the trunk. Handy for squeezing a few more little things into.

Since we picked up and dropped off our SL450 EDP in Sindelfingen in June 2017, we left some of our luggage at the hotel.

In the trunk, with the top down, we had a 29.1" x 10.2" x 19.1" suitcase, a 21.7" x 7.9" x 15.7" suitcase, the complementary Mercedes tote bag (and champagne), and a few other plastic, grocery-sized bags. The 29.1" long x 19.1" deep is the absolute maximum hardcase that will fit in the (partially) sunken trunk floor, and I wouldn't let anyone else put the larger case in or take it out. The 7.9" high fit easily on top of it, but I wouldn't go much higher. The other bags went around the sides. As nuketopia mentioned, there's space under the bottom panel for the emergency kit and odds and ends. (Note that there is no jack or tools.) Mercedes stopped selling SL trunk cargo nets a few years ago, but there are two (4?) hooks which you can use with other nets, such as ones from a C-class and E-class, including the side nets, when you have stuff in the trunk with the top down.

On the ledge behind our seats, we placed 2 soft-sided duffel-like bags, and my wife kept her purse on the floor. You can also hang your jackets on the hooks behind the seat.

Like others recommended, take your suitcases to your dealer to see what will fit. I did it twice in two different SLs, once when I placed the order, and once right before I left. Most of our bags were partially full when we arrived but completely full when we left!

I've been in touch with this crowd http://www.kjust.com but they do not make anything for the SL (yet). The owner is now trying to get hold of a SL so that they can produce a set and give me a price. Their prices (for other cars) seem a lot more reasonable than current offerings and from what I can see, on the web, the quality looks good and the bags look nicer than others that I have seen with built in wheels and handles etc.
