SL/R231: How Do We Know The Roll Bar Works?

How Do We Know The Roll Bar Works?

On the 230 one could manually raise and lower the rear roll bar, on the 231 one cannot. Just like the airbags I guess one can assume it will work in a roll over?

Well, now that you sold out and opted for the great big V8, I guess you need to worry about such things! I never paid much attention and actually thought there was a button somewhere to raise the roll bar device, but now that I think about it, I realize that I’ve never seen a 231 with it raised. Oh well, shows you how much I know about my car.

For the 231's, MB expects you to have 'Blind Faith' in the Rollbar, just as with the AirBags!....

The salesman I bought my SL from said one time he drove over a rough railroad crossing a bit too fast and the roll bars popped up. Evidently if the compukor detects a wheel or more leaving the road surface while traveling it tries to save the occupants. The service department put them back down so if you know of such a railroad crossing in your area........

You have to trust that these work just like all pro-active accident features. There is actually no roll bar like on the prior models; rather there are two plastic-covered steel posts popping straight up and kicking the cover off in the process.

Unfortunately, I can confirm operation in a wreck. I had turned onto the road leading back to my neighborhood about two months ago when a car came over the hill in my lane, running me off the road. I hit a concrete sewer cover which stood up about 9 inches above ground level. The airbags deployed, and as you can see here, the "roll over" protection devices popped up. The object I hit tore the oilpan off the engine and destroyed the front suspension and the car was totaled.

Luckily, two days ago, I picked up my replacement. A 2015 SL400 loaded with almost every feature including ABC and magic sky control and only 19k miles.

Wow! Hope you were not hurt. And, an SL400 with ABC! What a very rare car! Congratulations!

Hey TxBoss23, if you're still around what did you pay for the SL400 in 2019? That's when I bought mine for $42,500, without ABC and magic sky control!
