Trick to replacing trunk struts?

Is there a trick to replacing the trunk struts? I have OEM parts, matching what came with the car, but I can't lift the trunk lid high enough to get the new strut to go over the nub. Comes within millimeters, but I feel like I'm putting to much pressure pushing trunk lid up to get it to line up. Old part comes on and off no issue. Anyone changed their trunk struts and have a suggestion?

Have you tried compressing the struts a bit?

I tried. I put one end on a cloth on the ground and pushed down pretty firmly. Is there a trick to compressing it?

I just tried again and I can't compress it. I googled and found a post about another vehicle where someone used ratchet straps, but that sounds too bulky for where these struts need to be placed.

Ratchet straps do sound a bit bulky, but then again if it worked for them, shouldn't it work for you?

Though they appear to be the correct strut take one of the extended worn ones and place on the ground with a new one and see if they are the same length.

They were same part number. This is the solution:

Amazon Amazon

Irwin Quick-Grip 18" clamp

It was still a bit fiddly. Snap on the top first, then use the clamp to compress the strut and snap on the bottom. It will want to snap out of the clamp, but after a few tries one will figure out how to do it. I guess I'll have the tool 5 years from now when this set of OEM struts go out.

Now my trunk stays up!

I found the quick grip clamp awkward, but this small band clamp worked very easily for me.

The fabric is only 1" wide and it quickly comes apart so get the band off the strut once it's in place.

No more bumps on the head in cold weather :-)

With an assistant supporting the boot lid remove one strut and fit the lower end of the new strut first. Then with the help of the assistant applying some upward pressure (not brute force) on the boot lid the top end can now be fitted
