Seeking Info on Deisigno Edition...

I did run a forum search for this, but came up blank. In my search for a CPO SL450, I'm occasionally seeing Designo Edition cars show up. So far, all the CPO DEs have been in Brilliant Blue Metallic, so I was assuming that that was the only available color. Then, in the SL550 rear spoiler thread, member Patric shows up with a stunning Cardinal Red DE. So I have to ask: in how many/which colors were the DEs available? And, were DEs only available in 2017? There don't seem to be very many of them out there, but they check so many of my "requirement boxes" that I'd like to focus my search in that direction for a bit...if warranted. Thanks in advance!

I believe over the years there have been various designer special edition offerings but to my knowledge in 2017 the Designo Edition came on both the SL450 and 550 and were offered in both Brilliant Blue and Cardinal Red. I was never able to determine how many but the 450 in Cardinal Red was the only one I could find in my part of the country. Not a lot of demand for SLs north of Seattle.

I believe that is correct on the colors. Why MB made these without ABC is just beyond me. They were “special” editions, so why not make them REALLY special and load them up with all the goodies?

Yep, and the same applies for the 'Last Edition', (aka 'The Grand Edition'), as well....

Does seem rather odd, but then again, maybe MB knows 'something' about ABC on the 231 that we just don't.....

Maybe, but if there was a problem with the option, wouldn't they have just pulled it from availability? Look what happened to Mars Red, and I understand that that was just a temporary thing.

Patric, your car has spoiled me for the Blue DE. There are a couple of blue ones available right now, but having seen yours, I'd be afraid to buy a blue one for fear that after I did a red one would pop up. Honestly, I've seen a lot of sharp SLs in my search, but none prettier than yours. Congratulations. And I just noticed that it was exactly one year ago today that you posted those pics on the "spoiler" thread.

There is Bob again with the ABC

Special editions are visual editions. Eye Candy. The money is strictly in the interior and exterior options and wheels.
And while many would like to see loaded editions, that just doesn't happen as the price simply gets too expensive and MB can't charge as much for the exorbitant options price.
This is done not just on the SL but other models like the S-Class.

You will not find ABC or the B&O or Magic Sky in the SL. I remember the S-Class Concourse edition for $155k. Not even 4 seat climate control in that one. Not sure if it even had MBC on the RWD version.

It did not have MBC. Beautiful interior & wheels, but no MBC.

This doesn't directly answer your question since it is not a CPO car, but below is a picture of my 2016 SL 400 in Designo Diamond White Metallic with a Bengal Red/Black interior:

Exactly! Nearly $44,000 only for visual upgrades on an otherwise nearly bare bone model that lacks many creature comforts...

Why they couldn’t offer this beautiful interior color on all W222’s is crazy. I would have ordered it on my incoming 2020. Might have even gone with the Magnetite Black as well, but to me, the other interior colors—other than black—are either way too light (Porcelain, Silk Beige, etc.) or way too ugly (Nut Brown, Mahogany, etc.). So, it’s the same, old Iridium Silver with Black again for me. Survey says: BORING!

P.T. Barnum was correct.

All this raises two more questions for me. 1) How much extra did the DE SL cost? And 2) The expensive options, like ABC, were still available on the DE, weren't they?

One additional question for Patric, or anyone else with a DE: Does the top of that pretty Porcelain/Black steering wheel reflect distractingly in the windshield?

$15k for the combined package. (leather, trim, P93 package). List was $102, 875. This car was not configurable.
The only functional options thrown in would be Distronic Plus but I am not sure if some features cost money by default on the 450 vs being free on the 550 (Keyless Go, etc).
Other than that a total bare bone car with no options at all. It does look very nice with the forged wheels and chrome trim but I don't care for the piano white lacquer trim and black/white leather only steering wheel.

I ran the V.I.N. de-code on one of them and it did show the presence of the Premium and Driver Assist packages...or at least the contents of those packages. So I guess what you're saying is that the PEC (DE) package was $15k...basically for the wheels and the Designo+ interior, which is a fairly hefty hit. And I agree completely that the Piano White trim is just nasty with so much Porcelain already inside. I don't mind the steering wheel quite as much, but would question how long it would stay looking good.

Well, I have a crazy idea! Wouldn’t it be a hoot, to find a nice one, buy it and then swap the interior with another, fully loaded car? Big Stein is onto something!!!

I haven’t noticed any reflection issues about the wheel in the windshield. Perhaps my sunglasses are too dark, LOL.
