There are not any over the counter lithium batteries which are of a correct voltage for a 12v car system and if there were you could not use them because their charging and discharge characteristics are completely wrong. The Porsche Mercedes and batteries such as the Antigravity batteries use lithium iron phosphate cells with appropriate electronics to make them compatible. This allows them to charge on a normal car 12v circuit and maintain an appropriate circuit voltage. Some also contain a protection circuit which prevents complete discharge which could damage this type of battery.
The Antigravity has a built in jumpstart if this has happened.
Advantages are lightness and very low self discharge. I believe however that they are not so good at very low temperature.
I am sure other forum members will disagree with all of these statements!

I agree with your thoughts. The cold weather performance is one of the reasons that these batteries have not been well accepted in the general aviation airplane population too.
Big Jets a different story - they are not subject to the same cold soak there.

Wondering the same thing. If this battery's electronics convert the charge coming from the car's conventional charging system, then why does it require a special lithium charger? Seems like a conflict. I did go to the website, and while they let you choose the correct (main) battery for you car, the SL is not listed as a M-B application...so I put in S550 just to see what they had. The small battery discussed by PatrickGGG must be a motorcycle-intended unit. The car batteries listed run anywhere from $500-1200 depending on how serious your requirements are.

The one I noted earlier is an auxiliary size battery and less sophisticated electronics. The reason you don’t need a standard CTEK maintenance charger is because it produces all sorts of changes in charging voltages specifically to treat a lead acid battery and maintain its function. This is quite different from what your alternator charging system produces. The Lithium CTEK charger produces a more maintained voltage similar to your car charging system and the electronics in the battery regulate the charging.

I hadn't thought of it that way...
