Magic Sky doesn't work

The Magic Sky function in my 2020 SL450 will not go from dark to light. It has worked since I purchased the car last June and stopped working yesterday for no apparent reason. I've made an appointment with the MB dealership to have it fixed, but I thought I'd ask if anyone else has had the same problem and what the cause might be?

My 2018 working OK

Let us know what you find.

Is it dependent on some electrical contacts with the top of the windscreen? Have you dropped the roof and checked these?

Don't know and didn't check for contacts. Had to take the car in for the recall anyway and am letting MB figure it out.

Please keep us updated with whatever they determine. My 2017 has it and it works fine but would be interested in what they discover. Best of luck - hope they fix it quickly.

UPDATE: The service dept. did a hard reset (removed and reinstalled fuse) of the Magic Sky's control unit which restored operation. No fault codes, no bad electrical connections or wiring.....a mystery, but it works again.

This is the least invasive repair possible. It's a rarity to see any issues on magic sky; glad it was just a tripped or confused controller. Good luck!

It appears fuse #71 is used by the Magic Sky Control. Fuse #71 is in the fuse block behind the passenger seat. It's 7.5A, one of the unusual sizes.

Do the SL’s equipped with MagicSky still have the manually retractable sun shade? Just curious.

steve sl550 Apr 21, 2024 11:46 AM

No sunshade with Magic Sky

Streamliner Apr 21, 2024 12:26 PM

Well, that’s a difficult one, IF the MagicSky ever stops working and it’s sunny & hot outside. I guess in such a situation, one could get a couple of those side window shades with suction cups and stick them on the underside of the roof glass to block out the sun a bit. You folks with MagicSky anticipating a long, summer road trip might want to have some shades handy.

The glass is such that it must have ~120 V applied to lighten, otherwise it will remain dark. The default state is dark.

FWIW I think the "Magic Sky" feature is terrific !

Goes to show what I know! Makes all the sense to start out dark.

I drive my SL 99% of the time with the top down, so I never open the shade unless I’m cleaning the glass. Actually, if I could have ordered a solid, metal top, I would have, as I have never been a fan of the black, glass roofs.
