Very Lame…
As suspected, it doesn’t appear as though they did the check valves when they did the tensioners 🙁
Does the VMI show they were done at any time?
and btw they did do both tensioners. Both part #’s are present on your invoice.
Tensioners are 50% of the proper repair, especially if his engine # falls into affected range.
It may need both tensioners and check valves.

Hello all,
As I have mentioned prior, I have been in the middle of a very big project at work that has been beating my a$$. Work has had me working 15 hour days, doing a ton of driving and kept me from posting updates, etc. Although my work project has not completed yet I am at the 80% completion point. I now will have more spare time to post....For those of you that have taken the time to read these posts and offer assistance, feedback and encouragement when possible I do appreciate it sincerely.
On top of what was worked on prior and posted in this thread the work below was also completed.
FYI Mercedes noted that they did not replace my check valves originally when they completed my tensioner work. They admitted that once I brought it up that my engine should have received those (with help from you guys for mentioning that those should have been replaced!!), however Mercedes did do those valves later. Mercedes was still sticking to their guns by stating that they felt my oil pump was a major part of this issue. No matter what else was discussed they never backed off from that FYI.
After tons of tests (months) for this and that and Mercedes researching and speaking with whoever they speak with at Mercedes higher ups in their service world, the list below is all that was eventually replaced. Note I am typing exactly what my invoices list, no more no less. They also could not get the timing right after some part of the below work (I don't remember exactly what) but they tried multiple times and it would seem like things were going correctly and another side would then be off. (something like that) They found my timing chain was "stretched" and had to also be replaced, but they didn't charge me for that. They also found Mercedes docs that said some vehicles couldn't accurately have the timing reset without removing the engine and so yes, they removed my engine to complete the work.

This repair total was $9,600k, in addition to the prior work cost which brings the total to about $14,500. 90% of that total was paid for by ex warranty and 10% (3k worth) by the selling dealer.
Total cost to me? $200 deductible. Cost via my stress, aggravation, anger, second guessing, regret, etc..? Immeasurable
I am happy to announce that the cold start tapping/knocking, or whatever you want to call it has been fixed, in addition to the other problems Mercedes found along the way. My SL looks/feels/drives and sounds like my dream car again because well, it is.
Thank you all for participating in this journey..

Haha Looks like they “threw the baby out with the bath water” on that repair. They definitely didn’t want to see that car again. 😀
What a $#it show. They basically replaced the whole front of the engine. If it was the adjusters or timing, one would think it wouldn’t run well and show drivability issues. This was a cold start/noise complaint rather than a driveability issue. But hey, it’s a win for you (minus the time without your car and stress)
They let the warranty Co. foot the bill. 10% was the dealer cost, but they charge full list on parts and labor to warranty co.
LOL and still didn’t see an oil pump on that invoice 😀 Surprised they didn’t do the water pump @ 100k though.
But, you should be in real good shape from here with all those new drivetrain parts.
Take some time out and enjoy your new ride on a nice drive…
Good Luck!

Fantastic news you got it sorted!

Engine out.
That 10% dealer cost was to the dealer that sold me the car (not a Mercedes dealer) That selling dealer gave me the 3k toward repairs.
I sure hope you or correct about all the drivetrain parts and me being in good shape now, but I still have an extended warranty if need be. Even though the ex warranty is a pain to deal with they have coughed up some coin in the end.
Thanks.
Detailed.
Thanks for helping to get Blk beauty back to me.

I know this is an older thread and admit that I have not read every post, but I wonder if disconnecting the oil pump solenoid would have made a difference in the startup sound. For those not familiar with what I am talking about, see this thread:

Not likely. I received a new oil pump when they serviced my car and I remember them talking to me about the solenoid connection, etc.
