Was 2013 a bad year for the SL550?

This is just anecdotal, but it seems there are more problems posted here with model year 2013 SL550 than any other. Was 2013 a transitional year for the R231? Could that be the problem or is it something else?

There were many more 2013 sold than any other year. So statistically, that year is more likely to be mentioned in the internets 😀
Plus, they are the oldest and most likely to have the highest mileage.

That’s not to say there weren’t updates to the subsequent years. Chain tensioners come to mind, plus a few software updates.

The general rule of thumb still applies

Newer versions should be more sorted with less issues.

I just think these have less issues overall vs R230’s

R231's were more or less trouble-free for the whole life cycle. One of the most reliable MB out there even with the complex mechanical roofs. But anything will break over time and after nine years it is normal to see wear/tear items and some mechanical issues. Usual culprits are roof sensors, active seat issues (dynamic bolsters, massage, positioning), engine mounts, trunk lifts and the like. Nothing major on engine, transmission, suspension, brakes or body issues like rust. The R230's on the other hand started to have fairly significant issues just a couple years into production.

Besides the number of sold cars this is why there are 11,000 threads for the R230 vs just 2,000 for the R231.
