Really Like This Car

Unlike when I had a C7 Corvette, my other half will now ride with me on a nice long top down drive in the country. We took a nice 100 mile roadtrip this afternoon into PA for lunch and ice cream. Top down the whole time. What a nice car to take a cruise in and enjoy the scenery and a happy wife.

A banner day.
A heyday.
The perfect balance of spontaneous, and planned down to the last detail.

Very much a different experience. A much better one in my opinion. SL is just on another level. The drive you had was exactly what this car is made for.

Yes, as someone who lusted after SL’s in the 1960’s, unable to afford one, I was so enticed by the luxurious interiors, the exceptional fit & finish and the idea that the 3- Pointed Star stood for unsurpassed engineering excellence. Finally, I got a used ‘72 350SL in 1975 and then my first new one in 1979. The idea that the SL was a luxury, top down, boulevard cruiser was tailor made for me and my current SL450 is my eighth.

Unfortunately, the folks in Stuttgart gave up on the idea of a luxury 2-seat convertible and decided to let AMG build rocket sleds with the SL label to try & compete with the 911. Very few long time SL customers are buying the new car and 911 customers are not switching. In my opinion, we R231 SL owners drive the last REAL SL’s. I lowered the top on my car yesterday as I sat at a stoplight and people stared. It was as if nobody had ever seen the absolutely marvelous, retractable hardtop in action before. Everything old is new again.

That is an attention grabber when you put your hardtop convertible roof down at a stoplight. What if you waited until the light turned green? Slowly rolling forward while your top is retracting?

Well, I don't want to be a show off.
Lowering the top next to any number of rag top cars is a real kick.

2019 SL450
I have both the 2019 SL450 and a 2017 Corvette Grand Sport A8. Two entirely different machines and they both fill a different niche. The Corvette is a true sports car and the SL more of a grand touring car. Both fabulous machines!

And yes... the SL is far superior in comfort and quiet (with the top up) but the Corvette is very acceptable, especially the ride in Touring mode.

We had Corvettes for more than 50 years. Our last was a 2017 Grand Sport convertible that we drove back and forth to Arizona from Calgary many times. I was a reasonable road car and the fleet changed a couple years ago due to health reasons. We find the SL a more luxurious cruiser and wife does find it easier on her desire for comfort.

I don’t know how close OP is to Lancaster, but that area is a beautiful vista and area to drive through. You have to be careful what time of the year you go, though. The rainy season gives away the landowners there. The Amish love to fertilize with organic natural fertilizer, if you know what I mean.

Yes, we have a son that lives near Valley Forge so we drive through Lancaster County on a regular basis. It is a beautiful area but you do have to look out for horsedrawn carriages especially after dark.

If I only drove it as much as I post photos of it! Then, I could take some NEW photos of it! Here she is the day I took delivery in May of 2019.

That's right and something you should be planning.
