You learn something every day.

Hello all,

I have had my R231 for coming up on 5 years now. I love it now as much as I did from the start. With over 175k miles on it my black beauty still makes me smile and feel good. Last week I learned something new. I learned that you can close the hatch from the inside of the car. Now I am quite sure everyone will jump in here and say you all knew this, well I didn’t. lol.

I guess it’s because whenever I needed to open the hatch from in the car I was on my way out of the car to the hatch anyway, so I would naturally close the hatch while back there. You pull the hatch lever to open it and well, you push the latch lever to close it. I learned this while ready my wife’s BMW owners manual and saw that you close the rear hatch that way. I said well shoot, let’s try it in the drop top. Sure enough.

Did you really know that already, or did I just teach you something?

Beat wishes.

Some (I guess modern) MB models you can also close it with the key. R231 pre-facelift I heard you can do the same as long as you custom code it.

I mentioned it (the coding part) because there was a thread on this topic I can't remember what model year but they got one of the custom coders here on the forums, they are usually sponsors to code it.

Those coders can do many things and I always planned to get one, but it never was a priority when to actually buy it. Maybe in the Fall.

I learned you can set the Passenger rear view mirror to aim down when you put the car in reverse! You set it while in reverse and then hit the M button and set the position!

Was this “hatch” continued in the R232? Or maybe they call it something else?

So far 4 of 11 people didn’t know that lol.
I knew about the seat thing. We talked about that on this site a few years ago.

You can open the hood to the "service position" by further pushing back on the open hood.
I found this video to demonstrate. It's not a R231, but it works the same way.
Just be sure you have enough overhead space before opening. I almost hit the garage door rails the first time.

When you say 'hatch' is this also known as a trunk (or boot) lid?

Yes. Different parts of the country/world call it different things.

Thanks, but I know that the English used in America (wherein we both live) differs from that in England: nevertheless, I would justify my question since a "hatch" (part of a "hatchback") in countries where the rear, upward-opening cargo door, which includes the rear window, is common for cars.

As opposed to a traditional car (sedan)'s trunk or boot lid.
