Took the plunge: Roadster with 6 instead of 4 or 8 cylinders
As a fan of Mercedes and AMG in particular since 2016, and driving a S63 convertible since then, I was looking forward to see the new SL already for several years. Did see the new SL already mid 2021 for the first time. Went to the factory early this year and had a small and later this year a very long test drive. It is a very nice car, but it does not make me greedy to have one, certainly not at that price point...........the car has the same price as my current S63 Convertible, but I would never trade it in for the new SL, even not with closed wallets. It does not feel as an upgrade at all.
The S convertible is of course really in a class of its own. Also test drove a M850i and a M8 recently, beautiful and fast cars, but also not on the same quality level as the S, but very close. Would prefer a M850i over a SL63 however any day, much more car for much less money.........but that made me think..............when I trade in my 2019 S63 for a 2023 SL63, I will certainly miss my S63 right away, and I still have to pay significant money in such a transaction. Not a scenario that makes me happy. So ok, keep the S63 Convertible and buy a SL43 as a fun roadster to join it? Good idea, but overhere the SL43 is still very expensive (you can buy a M850i with V8 for that money, which in everything feels the better car to me) and then driving "only" with a 4 cylinder......... Since driving a Roadster is also (mainly?) about emotion, I took the plunge and did buy a new Z4 M40i as fun roadster, next to the S63. Was surprised how good that car is build (much better then the older Z4s) and in build quality, etc is certainly on par with the new SL. Weight is under 1650 kg, so much less than the SL (let alone the S). And it sounds very good too with the 6 cylinder in-line. Tech and infotainment is close to Mercedes and ..........had to pay (much!) less than in the scenario I would trade in my S63 for a SL63 and now I can enjoy both the Z4 M40i as well as the S63! :cool: My first Beemer in life, so will see how that goes, but also enjoying my current Mercedes AMG of course for a lot of years I hope! |
z4 is a great choice for real roadster: it has 'only' 2 seats, fun to drive, has all modern electronics and even reasonable trunk!

I previously had a 2020 Z4 M40 and I loved that car. Wanted to get the new SL after Z4 but changed my mind immediately after Mercedes released the pricing on the new SL and got a Jaguar F-type R instead which I love. I think Mercedes completely got the pricing off with the new SL, that car is not worth that much money.

I was at BMW yesterday and they had a beautiful Z4 on the floor. I think it's one of the best looking cars and values for a roadster. Although not on the same level as an SL "per se", I think it's better looking and has more attractive lines, not to mention no identity crisis. Post pics please!

Had already a nice roadtrip accross EU, and it is great to see how agile the car is (it weighs around 16oo kilo). Enough power and torque, even for high Autobahn speeds (ok, "only" 260 kmh, instead of > 300 kmh compared to my S63). Since it has adaptive suspension, it is also good for longer, relaxing trips. Tech on board is top (BMW OS7 / v11.2022.31), with HUD, ACC, etc, etc, only the massage seats and the night vision lack if you compare it with my S63, all the rest is there. It is even better (newer) if it concerns wireles AA/Carplay, etc. Ok, I will stop now, it is not the Beemer forum 😶 Am glad I did not trade in my S63 for a SL63, now I have still best of both worlds in 2 cars (for less money 😁). |
It’s been a while since I had my R231, I recently took delivery of a MY 23 Z4 M40i. For the price, if you want a 2 seat sports car it’s hard to beat it. Quality, style, and performance are top notch, for a lot less money than an SL.

How is the ingress/egress in the BMW vs the new SL? I find it a little difficult to get in and out Porsches and F-Types but I have no issues with my wife’s 2019 SL. I like the looks of the BMW but it also looks low and tight. Thanks.
