New MB 380SL owner

Hello All -

Just recently acquired an 85 380 SL to add to some Bimmers (hope that's not a dirty word here) and have some questions

1) Leather on driver's seat is cracked and seat cushion could use replacement, it's not as firm as passenger seat. What would be the best way to treat the leather? Is there such thing as replacement leather skins? Is there replacement seat cushions

2) Blower motor not working. Fuses are ok. Someone told me a thermostat controls the fan motor? Where do I find the motor leads (connecting plugs) to check for voltage to fan motor? I don't have a service manual yet.

3) Which publisher prints the best manual and where would you purchase it?

Thank You

I'd suggest joining the Mercedes-Benz Club of America at www.mbusa.org. You'll get the STAR magazine which will have articles on restoration, as well as ads from parts suppliers of all types. Only $45/yr.

I'm all about having a wide knowledge/experience base... I have both an early 300TE (240k, runs great) and a 1992 e32 V12 that is lots of fun to fix up. And when I say fix up I mean curse at and hit with my pricey specialty tools.

I'm looking at adding a grey mkt 1985 280SL to the mix. As for manuals I've found most of what I'm going to need at book4cars.com. BTW, I'd stay away from Chilton's and I've come across many good DIY Bentley's manuals (though not offered for the 107). Here's the link: http://www.book4cars.com/result3.htm?finddesc=380sl. It's at least a good start.

OK, I have the seats with no instructions. Are there instructions (free)?

Also, JJ Products in East Orange, NJ is far less expensive for these seat covers than most. Jim is a good guy also.

Thanks if you can direct me to directions.....

I'd search ebay, there is a little "booklet" I see fairly often that covers just this (seat) topic.

Also, FWIW, I replaced both leather seat covers with MB-TEX as I appreciate it's durability over the leather experience.

When it comes time, all my cars will end up MB TEX.
