Rear Plate Bracket?

I have a newly acquired 89 560 SL and when I went to install the rear license plate I noticed it could not be installed without removing some of the top center of the plate.

It seems to hit the area under the trunk that has a bulge.

Is there supposed to be some sort of bracket that places the plate lower?

Seems odd. Any help appreciated.

Must be a bad plate. No clearance problem on any of mine.

Here are a few photos. I trimmed that plate but you can see where the past plates have rubbed.
