Torque convertor??

Hi
Recently took my 1972 350SL on a roadie round Europe, cruising approx 2hrs a day on variety of back roads and motorways beautifully....until, when in town traffic and low revs the car kept cutting out - the water/oil etc are all good. Issue is that ok in park, but switch into drive and the revs drop and the car cuts out. Had to do short journey to garage by restarting the car in park, increase the revs, then clunk it into drive before coasting to a stop in neutral - not a relaxing way to drive! Am planning to replace all leads, plugs, and distributor, but thinking this issue may be caused by a faulty torque convertor? Car is currently in Belgium awaiting repair! Advise much appreciated, inc best place to get spares!
