gauge cluster issues

Hey there. I've tried searching many different ways. I need to get the gauge cluster out and check the tach and all the connections back there. Not sure exactly how to get the steering column down so that I can get the gauges out. Not sure if we remove the column, or the steering wheel itself. Can anyone help with this? Thank you very much.

If you are talking about the '77 450SL then all you have to do is remove the steering wheel.
I don't know when they changed but pop out the emblem in the center. You will have either a nut or a 10mm allen head bolt. The allen head is the worst because it has loc-tite on the threads. Some have had to use a small torch to heat the bolt. Mercedes sells special tools to remove the cluster but I have always been able to pull it out with just a little pressure. It is held in by a a rubber gasket.

Her is a link to where a guy does the odometer repair but it also shows how to remove the steering wheel and cluster.

Thank you very much. The cluster is already loose. Just been figuring out the best way to get it out and thought that the whole column had to be lowered. You saved us a lot of work. Would the emblem come out easily with a flat-head screwdriver?

Thanks again!!!

Popped it off and found a 20mm or 21mm nut. Should get it off today. Thanks again.
