^ agreed! Look for muffler shops that have been around for years with guys that have Popeye fore arms. those are the folks that can weld anything and do it cheap.

I have not deleted the res, but I did the secondaries. I took a piece of stainless "U" bend to an old well known shop. They cut out the secondary kitties and welded in the "U" bend pieces for fifty simoleons.

My resonators are going back on this week. Switching out Kleemans to MBH long tubes with Xpipe. If I were to do it again, I would delete the mufflers, run straight pipe and leave the resonators in place.

Since I "lost" my sound after a work-over regarding engine idling I am looking of ways to improve it and removing the resonates looks like the thing to do. But I am most shocked about some of you guys thinking it a simple and easy job done in a hour or so. This is a stainless 316 steel and have to be handled and welded in a proper way or you will soon have problems of holding it together.

Theres a pic. of a SL55 AMG being weld underneath with the exhaust still in place and welded with a MIG/MAG This is definitely not the correct way and this will not hold - you will loose your exhaust in no time.

The only and correct way to weld this is to use a pipe of the same material as the exhaust (either steel 304 or 316) and for the actually welding you will have to take the exhaust to the workbench - having argon-gas led into the exhaust (backing gas to protect the welding from the inside) and then you weld the pipe with TIG and using TIG filler wire and while welding you will have to follow welding procedure not over-warming the steel. After it has cooled down you will have to treat it with stainless steel pasta.

Then; and only then; will this fantastic steel hold a lifetime.

Go cheap here and you will pay at a later time. Your choice.

At the shop now, they are using 304 steel and will be charging £210/$330

Excited to hear it!

I took a piece of 3" piece of stainless (316) "U" bend to an old local shop in Indianapolis. they removed the exhaust, cut out the secondaries and welded in the "U" bend on a bench for a whopping total of $50. The "U" cost me $100. They told me they cannot weld the piece properly in place and needed to do it on a bench. An hour later and $50 lighter, I was down the road.

I run EvoSport shorties as well, but I cut the secondaries and left the res.

will try and take a video to explain.

Based on your videos, resonator delete plus headers are the ticket. What headers did you use and why?

2009 AMG SL63
Based on the mixed reviews from forums (do it it sounds great, don’t go it I will drone or too loud, etc) I was hesitant to do exhaust mods. Least week I had resonators and secondary cats removed o my 2009 SL63. I also added a X pipe where the cats used to be. Cost was $100 for stainless 3” from primary cats to mufflers X 2, plus $100 for a the X pipe and $200 for labour. Total $400 CDN or $300 USD. There was no need to remove exhaust system to weld. I kept the old parts just in case I wanted to reverse the process.

The results - it sounds awesome. Especially when manually shifting up and down. No droning. When cruising on the highway with roof and windows up the change is barely noticeable. However, when you drive aggressively with roof down it sounds noticeably louder. Still not as load as other cars I own but great for this car.

After careful research over an extended period of time it seems evident the only exhaust mod that truly improves performance, is "beneficial" for the engine and SOUNDS GOOD is installing MBH long tube headers and coupling it with a custom tune. Why anyone would muck up the stock exhaust tone with anything other than a long tube header upgrade is beyond my comprehension. Maybe, but i try to keep an open mind on it and just curious to get a feel of how it would sound. Might be a bit loud to delete both, if you're into that sort of thing you might like it.

I really like this exhaust note here, not sure what the setup is, but it sounds perfect

When I had my 55 I deleted both and it was a novelty that wore off very quickly. It was VERY loud but sounded like a truck. Leave the mufflers on!

I've had my SL55 since '03 and I never felt that the exhaust lacked character. After all these years I actually think its louder than when I bought it. As fast as these cars are, they are still luxury cruisers and not race cars. Hell, I have plenty of cars that scream. It's kind of nice to have one that doesn't need ear plugs!

It should not void warranty but depends on the mood of the person checking it for cpo.

Plays With Cars
This thread inspired me to delete the resonators on my SL63. The result - do it, and do it now! This is how the car should have came from the factory. My C63 was louder than my current SL63 and E63, which I've never been happy with. This is much closer to, and maybe slightly louder than, the C63 was with the factory exhaust. It's maybe 10% louder at cruise, just enough to notice it, and no resonance or drone of any kind. Under acceleration it sounds epic, probably 30% louder, and you get a lot more of the M156 unique machine gun exhaust note. Downshifts sound fantastic and you get some nice burble and a little popping on the overrun. Wife approved, she said it sounds better too. Long story short this is a no compromise modification, it's all upside. I paid $150 at a local hot rod exhaust shop that does great work.

Anyone that took resonators off their SL55 want to sell them? I had mine taken off along with all cats deleted with long tubes & it’s just too much. The shop tossed the resonators even though I said I wanted to keep them just in case and we’ll here we are

No resonators to sell but do have primary cats if you're interested.
