SL600 muffler delete. My early opinion
A member asked for my initial thoughts on my muffler delete, so I gave it to him. So, this post will look awful familiar to him, but I thought it good to post for those interested in this mod.
If not for Jay, Sean and Marcus, I no doubt would've stayed the course and installed my electric cutouts. I'm glad I didn't.
Here we go....
You know when you get a new toy, or a new mod, and there's nothing than can make you think negatively towards it? I'm in that mode right now.
The car sounds effffing amazing. But make no mistake, it's much louder. There is no drone, per se, but there is quite a bit more exhaust note in the cabin. Not necessarily a bad thing, but there's more db's, that's for sure.
At highway speeds, when only maintaining speed, it's sounds only slightly louder than OEM, but louder nonetheless. At startup and stop/pull-a-ways, you're gonna cream yourself a few times at first, and you're gonna find that your cheek muscles hurt from smiling so hard.
At WOT, it sounds like Lucifer's scream. It's unholy. Very, very throaty with a bit of burble on decel in held gear.
For $125.00, there's no reason not to try it. It can always be put back to stock for the same money.
There will be video taken at MIR, I'm sure. So you should have a real good idea of what WOT sounds like.
I will say that I do notice more catalytic converter fart smell. Could be because I'm driving it a bid harder right now but maybe the muffler was also soaking up some of that funk.
Also, slight RPM fluctuations, when driving very slowly in neighborhoods, are much more pronounced. Not a big deal, but worth a mention.
Uber happy right now, but again, I'm in that new toy defense mode. You all know exactly what I'm talking about.
Can't wait to hear what it sound like at morning cold/start when the wastegates are wide open for that 20 seconds.

Alright, here's a little iPhone video clip. Apparently, I had the iPhone upside down when I was recording.
But you get a chance to hear what it sounds like at cold start with the wastegates wide open. Right around the 30 second mark, you can hear them close and the sound mellows out. Than a few throttle blips. Didn't want to rev it too much as it was still a bit cold.

Based on BOR's results I just had my SL600 done. I could not believe how mellow it still is. Then I looked inside the stock mufflers and ah-ha. They are straight pipe also with just a few small slots cut into the straight pipe. There is no "re-direction" of flow as many factory mufflers have.
If you are concerned that this mod will be too loud, don't be. There is zero drone in the cabin with the windows up "the true test" and frankly I can very barely tell the sound difference during normal/cruise driving.
A little louder at idle and WOT but nothing that is going to attract unwanted attention. I give it

that does sound great and I definetly want to try it out. You went to a muffler shop and they simply cut the mufflers out and placed a straight pipe in their place?
Any input on any of the guys that have done this in an SL55
Thanks

Yep, still waiting on my tune. I've experienced the progression of sound on my vettes. Going from a cat back, then add LT headers and high flow cats and then heads and cam. Each step brings on more db's.

Not to hijack the thread much but the Corsa systems work really well with the mod'ed vettes. Super loud and aggressive at WOT and absolutely no drone when cruising. I've had them all If your B&B's are droning too much try the Corsa. Yours might not be too bad with stock engine internals. Blower or cam/heads really adds exhaust volume and resulting db's.

my favorite exhaust toy was a tial 44mm wastegate with an open dump, when wastegate opened up it bypassed out an 8 inch long pipe, def scared the hell out of a few people in parking garages/tunnels

I am thinking about doing this mod, also. I added the Corsa to my C5 vette for the same reason... "Why have a performance car that sounds like your Grandmothers grocery getter?"
I just didn't want it to be too loud at cruise. Actually I was hoping that it would add NO db increase at cruise. Think I am gonna pull the trigger. Just straight pipes, muffler delete?

The smiles come at WOT and stop/pull-a-ways. It's orgasmic.

Yep, I had the same concerns and I couldn't be happier with the results. At highway cruising speeds, you'd be hard pressed to tell there was any modification done, as the wind noise completely drowns it out.

I think the SL55 sounds pretty damn good stock. If my SL600 had the SL55 sound, I'd never have touched it.

On sl55 you can do a resonator delete...and keep the factory muffler. v8K engine exhaust evacuation setup is totally different than v12tt due to the type of pewer adder and engine config.
