Does adding a cold air intake increase mpg?
What other small mods can increase mpg?

It is a supercharged car. Why adding cold intake that will drop the intake temp and make incoming air denser and this require more fuel (resulting in more power) would increase mpg?

Exactly. If you want to increase your MPG put a air filter directly on the throttle body, the warmer air will result in better fuel economy but also decreased performance. Cruise control at 55-65mph, keep tire pressure correct, use only 93 octane so the timing doesn't retard, Reduce any extra weight in the vehicle, limit the use of the climate control, etc. Before anyone says why cruise at 55 and blah blah it defeats the purpose of owning an SL55...I know this. I am answering the OP based on their question.

A tough question for must of us. We drive 500+ horsepower cars so are not terribly concerned about fuel mileage. I'm guessing your best option is to keep your foot out of it which is something I have trouble doing. There is an added benefit to this strategy, you rear tires will last longer.:y

Exactly, there's only so much you can do.

if you truly believe any type of intake will increase MPG or HP u are probably 16 and should be driving a honda civic with a fart can.

get over it u drive an sl55 and you shouldnt be concerned with going from 18 mpg and trying to get 19.

embarrassing that this is even a topic of conversation.

you realize that puts you squarely in the 14-year category dreaming about the civic with the type-r stickers and fart can ;)

there are many intakes that will give you more power on stock motor simply by reducing the intake temp (ie cold air intakes) on boosted engines. in addition to that on n/a engines a less restrictive intake (less kinks, bigger air filter) will result in better throttle response and a little improvement of upper rpm hp

are you going to see 10% more power from cai? no, not really. but it is (often) a money-wise improvement that some folks decide to go for. especially if you have mods on the motor.

I installed all of these things on my car & got 16% better mileage.

Move up hill from your job and get unlimited towing from AAA. Coast to work as much as possible and have them tow you home.

Otherwise you can shorten your right leg by 2 inches and not adjust your car seat.

OK, obviously thisis sarcasm. The easiest way to do this is to go easier on the gas, but what is the point?

In practical terms, when we tune these cars, we make them more efficient.

I have swapped back and forth between stock mappings and our performance mappings and if I drive consistently, I see a +-2mpg increase in our tuned set up. Of course all bets are off at the track...... it's 6mpg! :)

Sell it and get an SL350? Seriously dude, if you want good MPG your better of getting a Car without an AMG badge. Wont be as fun, and you wont enjoy it as much. But, if saving a few bucks keeps you happy, id say get a different car?

Even if its just a couple more mpg, you can drive it further.

I average 10 mpg with Renntech mods. This is my daily driver and drive it semi aggressively when it's safe. I spend about $80 a week on 91 Octane (California) and never concerned with fuel economy. This is not the type of car you drive and worry about mileage, but again to answer the question, all your suggestions may lead to better fuel economy! Our cars already have a "cold" intake. The snorkels gulp air outside of the hot engine bay now. The design of the airbox though right on top of the engine probably just heats incoming air anyway so its a wash. I have seen engines with header wrap on their OEM plastic snorkels to cool incoming air I doubt if they benefit to mileage is measurable there. I have a full Renntech carbon intake (OEM) style on my car and I do notice that carbon parts do dissipate heat better than aluminum or plastic.

average 16 mpg , normal driving with heavy city traffic , mountain roads , etc... occasional speed bursts and high speed
stints ( 125/130 mph ) . I'd say this is good mileage for a 500+ hp car :)
very happy with it and mileage is never really the issue when driving a V8K .
Get another car as your DD :)

I average over 20 mpg on my SL 600 with all the SpeeDriven mods except turbos. The V12 gets surprisingly good mileage when you are not in city traffic and or mashing the throttle.
