2006 SL55
I have a chance to get a 2006 SL55 with Performance Package (030). 18k miles, fresh tires, one (female) owner. Car is flawless. Any advice on fair price?

I'd pay over 40k for it- the 030 , one owner and LOW miles cant be beat. Most 06's are around 40-50k mileage.

If a 2006 SL55 with 18K miles in excellent mechanical/cosmetic condition ran at the dealer auction, it would sell for about $40K give or take $1K.
So you can expect it to retail for at least $44,900, probably more as far as asking price ($47,900 or $49,900 would be my guess at dealer asking price) If the car passes a PPI and is original paint/panels, it's worth grabbing at anything under $42K. That's wholesale, because a $40K car at Manheim has $1K worth of fees. Bruce |
I just bought a 2006 with 030 and 7k miles and I paid way over $40k but I feel like I got a great car for the money. The MSRP on my car was $160k.

Just bought it at $40k. 18k miles. All original panels, paint, everything. One owner. All records, orig sticker. Performance Package, Ventilated Seats, Xenon headlights, 19" Wheels, and Keyless Go. Pewter/charcoal. Original MSRP $146,095.
Any recommendations about extended warranty? Does MB offer anything? |

$40k is a good deal. Part of the reason you got a good deal is because of the color (Pewter). It's just not as popular as black, silver, or even blue.

I have pewter silver metallic on my 04 SL55 and think it is gorgeous, but it does not seem to be as popular for certain. In July of 08 I purchased my car (pano roof with 21K miles) for 44K. I continue to be disappointed in the depreciation these car have as a seller, but as a buyer what an amazing car for the money...I've been considering a 65 but I understand that those cars have higher/different maintenance needs even beyond the 55....bespoke rotors, etc...
As for depreciation in general, there used to be a joke in the car business: "What's the best way to turn $120k into $40k? Answer: Buy a Mercedes and wait 4 years." These cars will never hold their value, but I'd rather pay $40k-ish for an SL and sell it later for $18k then pay $120k new and sell it for $40k. The biggest depreciation hit has already taken place. |
