Engine oil …. but which to choose?

What oil are you using …. Mobil 1 certainly …. but which one?

Mobil 1 – Peak Life 5W-50 ….. fully synthetic? (old name: Rally Formula) and which oil to use to break-in a renovated engine? …..

pdjv 10-08-2013 01:46 PM

Just had a B service done. Dealer used Shell 5W-40 synthetic. Basically any oil that meets M-B spec is acceptable - does not have to be Mobil 1.

Duckman748 10-08-2013 02:27 PM

I use the Shell Rotella 5W-40 synthetic in the blue jug in everything I own.

RaFFi ///AMG 10-08-2013 02:40 PM

Mobil 1 0W40.

jrgator 10-09-2013 12:03 PM

ditto on Mobil 1 OW40. As I recall there is a different spec oil by M-B for the AMG cars.

cal1 10-09-2013 12:29 PM

0W40 here too. Although, my SL goes to bed for the long Wisconsin winter and will almost never get started in temps below 50 F. I suspect your SL won't get fired up much in the middle of the Swedish winter either. :)

alx 10-09-2013 03:42 PM

mobil one 0w40- why experiment or change what the car comes from the factory with?

the recommendation for mobil one 5w40 esp used in gasoline engines burning 10% or more ethanol has been withdrawn

Inspiredbenz 10-09-2013 06:23 PM

mobil 1 ow-40

The viscosity and temperature chart is very interesting. Thanks for posting. I suppose not going many RPM is the only fool proof way of ensuring these little monsters don't break :)

Speedriven1 10-11-2013 02:24 PM

Mobil 1 or Fuchs 0w40

superstar 10-11-2013 03:13 PM

Liqui Moly 5w40 fully synthetic

Rick SL55 10-11-2013 08:35 PM

Mobil 10W40

Velociabstract 10-11-2013 08:41 PM

I use Mobil 1 0W40 and from what I've seen on Bob's the oil guy forum it seems to be about the best viscosity Mobile makes for street cars. I'm sticking with it unless my UOA comes back with concerns. It's hot year round in my neck of the tropics so a thicker oil may be preferred. I'll know soon.

Wrong oil. The recommendation for 5w40m has been withdrawn for gasoline engines running on gasoline with over 10% ethanol content.

Fastnine 10-13-2013 12:25 PM

So what is the dealer sposed to put in? I do live in florida were its death hot most of the year

alx 10-13-2013 12:44 PM

The dealer is supposed to put mobil one 0w40 in your sl65.

Honestly the 5w40 oil is prolly not a problem either, especially in fl, but it is not what the mercedes recommendation is for your car. As a matter of fact the mobil one 5w40 oil is specifically not recommended for your Amg.

gjnockie 10-13-2013 05:09 PM

This is a very interesting discussion because of the potential wearing of the cams and flat tappets on the M156 SL63 engine. I don't know if the SL55 engine has a similar cam and lifter setup.

I have been told that the official oil recommendation for AMG engines is now 5w-40 Mobil one Formula M non ESP oil and no longer 0w-40 Mobil one Euro formula. Now the question is how much zdp and phosphorus does the 5w-40 formula M have? Does anyone know? I know the 0w-40 has 1000ppm of both zdp and phosphorus.

I believe the 5w-40 recommendation is because it won't drain out of the lifters as easily or quickly.

Since my car is still under warranty I am going to stick with the Mercedes recommendation. If it wasn't I would look for an oil with higher zdp and phosphorus levels. Something like Brad Penn 5w-40.
