Some Updates to My SL63

Hello all,

I've been a long time member on my forth AMG but have not really posted much over the years.

I've had my 09 SL63 since new when my old 03 SL55 Renntech Stage 3 lease expired.

When I purchased the 63 I put on the HRE 593R's from the SL55 and had it lowered.

Other than that I didn't do much until this year and have been missing the torque of the Renntech 55.

Finally in May I decided I needed to add some power and knew it would not be easy as it was with the SL55 motors. I had Eurocharged do an ECU tune, remove the charcoal filters and install AFE filters. It gave me a bit of an increase and better throttle response.

The mod bug in me has been awakened.

The next round of mods was just completed last week.

I purchased the MBH long tube headers during their blowout sale and had them put on and had Eurocharged re-tune the car. What a difference. The car sounds insane and it seems like it is getting quicker day by day.

It dynoed 420 whp and 370wtq on a dyno dynamics dyno. I felt the numbers were low but I think this dyno always shows lowers numbers than other dynos.

While the headers were being installed I had the dealer colour match the front star emblem, fog light surrounds, hood vents and door handle trim and painted the calipers AMG GT Yellow.

I think I'm happy for now with the performance and appearance but I may have to have a talk with Weistec about a blower in the spring to get the torque the 55 had.

Here are a few pics of the 63.

1) The car looks great, I love the yellow calipers, great Idea.

2) Real fans notice details : You don't have the AMG hood, but the regular hood. That is very unusual. Is there a reason for that ?

3) GO WEISTEC !!!!!!!

Good Catch on the hood. I never realized there was a different AMG Hood. I did a google image search and see some SL63s have the same hood I do and some have the one with just the center section raised? Maybe AMG has different hood styles for different regions? I'm in Canada and some of the European SL63 have the same hood as mine?

Thanks for the positive comments guys.

So your car is 100% stock ? Strange.

I'm 99% sure all the AMG R230 Facelift car have the same hood with a hump. All the Non-AMG Facelift have the hood you currently have. Curious.

I'll make a research about that.

beautiful car bro. I love when people make tasteful modest changes to the nearly perfect shape of the R230. the only exception to the rule IMO is the wide body which takes the understated beauty of the R230 shape to its extreme.

By the way, it seems odd that your WTQ is lower than WHP.

Thanks I do like the prior wide body that has the same front and rear as factory but can't bring myself to cut the fenders on my car. If I still had my old 03 SL55 I would definitely have gone wide body.

The WTQ is lower because the car has no forced Induction. The 2009 - 2011 SL63 have the NA motor.

Looks really good! I can recommend supercharging this thing, it really flies with a blower!

Here.. Here.. I like to add "It's your rig your $$ your vision/taste" & def know plenty of purist think my widebody is on the Rice-Cake menu, but like you said MOST dig widebody period & I find near stock rides look the BEST w/minimal tasteful modifications perfectly executed above!

SpiritR230 11-16-2013 08:31 AM

what's........with the hood?

Read my posts in the thread.

This Prior Design SL63 has the same hood as my SL63 as well.

Being more of a purist, your ride pushes the boundaries for my taste, but I still like it. It exudes aggressiveness to me. Now if you painted the tri-star red, then I would definitely have to play the rice card.

That SL is a Pre-facelift R230 wich has been re-built as a Facelift Wide-body.

Like did AMGFan & The Ricker.

So that hood isn't stock in any case.

I've searched, all the AMG R230 Facelift cars have the Hump Hood.

Your car is a mystery. Did you buy it knew ?

mcguirja 11-16-2013 07:36 PM

I think in early production Mercedes ran out of some AMG parts

My SL63 is missing the AMG gas and brake pedal, it has the standard SL pedals, but the parking brake is AMG :word:

Just a theory but I can't think of a different reason why I wouldn't have the real ones. I do have the AMG hood though, must have been a good supply day for that part.

Ahahahah I hoooope that's not true... That would be a pretty bad soviet-style issue...

My theory is that OP bought his car used, that the former owner damaged the hood and bought the cheaper regular hood instead the more expensive AMG one.

(I would't be suprised to see MB charge 50% more for the AMG unit...)

SL55K 11-17-2013 03:45 AM

Yellow calipers are a very nice touch!

I purchased the car new from a Mercedes benz dealership. I'm puzzled as well as to why the hood is different. I will post the question on the AMG owners club forums.

Anyway, I also want to know. there must be an explanation.

RaFFi ///AMG 11-18-2013 11:42 PM

Yes I bought it brand new from an authorized Mercedes Benz dealer in May 2009.
