Exhaust muffler/ silencer delete
The rear silencers have already been removed on my car,and sounds quite nice on throttle.having the mid silencers taken out Monday, will try to put sound up in here.

Hey man, I'm interested about hearing both sounds, can you please record the sound now before removing the mid silencer and tell me what did you exactly remove?, waiting for youtube videos
I'm confused what to do in order to get a better sound of my SL55.

On my 65, I only have 157. I do NOT have 158, 159, or 160. It sounds perfect, as it should. I would imagine this would be a lot louder on a 55 as there are no turbos to "muffle". If I were a 55 owner, I would get rid of 158 and 159 first.

I removed #159 center mufflers. Sound is perfect. Even my wife had to agree the car sounds better. Now its perfect. Any louder and it will be too much.

If you are interested in removing the secondary cats, let me know and I will dig up an old link on how to do so by welding in a piece of stainless "U" bend.

I have the secondary cats removed which is 158 on the drawing. I also have headers which probably add some to the sound, but I get a very slight drone at idle. Anything above idle and cruising speed sounds very much stock maybe just a little louder. You can tell it is not stock at WOT. Here is an idea of what it sounds like only I used a cheap flip to record it. It is much louder than the recording picks up.

Get a piece of stainless 3" "U" bend. I used 316 alloy that I got from a guy in California that is no longer around. I think you can get "U" from ebay. I think 304 stainless should be fine as well.
Cut out the cats and then weld the two pcs of "U" in like I show on my crappy drawing. When you have the "U" in your hand and then look at the way the secondaries sit, it will become obvious where to make the cut. My drawing is just a rough example. A number of guys have done this and all of them thought it was a great mod.

159's removed on my 2005 SL55. The car sounds fantastic. I can't imagine anyone regretting this mod. It's exactly how the car should have sounded from the factory.
Note: 158 in the diagrams above are secondary cats, not resonators. Careful removing them if your state has SMOG testing. The car might not pass if they are removed.
159's are resonators and have no bearing on emissions whatsoever.
Also, no change to MPG other then it's hard to keep your foot out of it, especially with the top down!

Just seen this thread, just to confirm do you all remove '160' as the first port of call, then move down to 158 and 159? Or does 160 have to stay?
Thanks

I popped down to my local exhaust specialist yesterday to get the job priced up and he advised that there was no need for the X over pipe and advised to have the pipes running separate? Is this correct or am I likely to run into problems?

My SL55 with MBH long tubes, Xpipe, stock pipes, no cats, no resonators and stock mufflers. Not obnoxiously loud and no drone.
Edit: Never let off the throttle when you hear the engine cut, its due to the traction control. Best parts are @ 7seconds and 59 seconds.

JUST resonator delete is just fine, it just opens up exhaust note, it def sounds much beefier and throatier!

The cats do most of the muffling. I have removed all 4 with the install of a Eurocharged stage 3 kit. The idle is fine at 86db however on the gas it is way too loud. The OEM 'mufflers' are in fact just resonators as they are straight through. Anyone without cats who has put proper mufflers on?

As it turns out, it was not a thread I created, but instead a PM which I have deleted. I found my crappy drawing though.
