Frightening problem
So I am driving to work in my SL63 230 , at a roundabout the engine died, steering went heavy ignition lights
came on. I came to a stop put it in park and it started first time, I thought I must have moved the key accidently.
A few days later it happened again, and I was no where near the key. I am worried now that it will cut when driving
fast, and have stopped using it. Any help would be appreciated.

I had my C55 die on me mid turn (right hand). It's a little bit of a shock when your steering wheel unexpectedly gets super stiff during a turn; luckily there was nobody next to me in the next lane, and there was angled parking on both sides of the road I was turning into (one way street). So when it died I just coasted 45 degrees straight into an empty parking spot. Couldn't have gotten any luckier really...

Sounds like your CPS. It is an easy fix to DIY.

CPS issues are common and easy to replace on the 55s. I don't think it is very difficult on the N/A 63s, either and appears to be a common issue for them as well.
This article is for the C63 but would be similar for the r230 sl63,

its interesting you posted this as I had a similar episode just days ago while going across the famous Chesapeake bay bridge. Spooky to say the least. No keychains here.

It is the crank position sensor. It shouldn't be expensive to fix. The part (in Canada/US) was around $75 and was about an hour to replace. I had to replace it on my S Class, not my SL 63 but it took me about an hour to replace it myself.

Thanks guys, do you know how to describe this fault when booking in
to MB. Do I just ask for the crank sensor to be changed, or are there better ways
to describe it..

While it is a possibility this will fix it, it may not be your issue. I'd suspect EIS issues could cause similar problems.

If it is happening around corners or stops, it was your key separating momentarily and causing the car to cut out. You can try it out by manually pushing the key slightly down and out. If it cuts out again, it was your key ring with too many keys/weight attached and the centrifugal force of going around a corner at speed was causing the issue. Has it had any issues since you removed the heavy items from your key ring? This happened to me a few times and it was the key losing contact. Cost to fix = zero.

Took my car into Mercedes and they confirmed it was crank sensor, they quoted me £185 all in,
I was pleased when I picked the car up, the bill was LOWER ! down to 145 , she said labour was
lower on cars over 5 years old. So all fixed, until the next problem.. Thanks to members for their help.
