18"TIRE AND WHEEL CHOICE
This is my first post to this forum, although I have watched and collected a lot of excellent information by reading the posts . Thank-you to all the contributers out there.
After studying my options for tires and wheels from these types of forums for the last 3 months. I've finally decided on a combination for my 2003 SLK 230. They are as follows: ASA ST-3 chrome plated wheels. 18" x 8.5" for the front, and 18" x 9.5 on rear. Tires are Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3, 225-40-18XL Front. and 255-35-18XL.
Americas Tire in my area was the low bid at $1850 installed. Less than what Tire rack quoted me.
In the end, I didn't like the busy look of the split spoke style , or the bulkier appearance of the Monoblock look. I like that my stock MB centers will fit these wheels. And I like the plain chrome 5 spoke lines.
The performance feedback on the Goodyears especially in rainy conditions make them a good fit for me here in the Pacific Northwest. My close second was the Perrelli .
So there it is then...I'll order tomorrow at noon PST incase anyone has some last minute advice or pearls of wisdomto share.
Thanks again for everyones experience here.

This is the setup that I chose as well. The ASA wheels are great quality for the price. I wish I had gone with the F-1's I elected for Michelin Pilots, you're spot on,not a good rain tire.
Post pics I'll do the same.

My next mod is going to be a guided missle turret mounted on the boot. Its tricky because the weight of the thing effects the performance of the retractable top.
I've found a couple of people who are contemplating this mod, but have not designed a good system yet .
There would be some performance advantages in heavy traffic in that you could effectively clear a lane when needed.
I also hate to be cutoff in traffic and I could blow those people to kingdom come with the flick of a switch.
I think I'd use a switch with the Mercedes emblem on it.
