SRS light on

HI,
SLK 2001 320
The SRS light flashes once and then stays on when driving.
Any pointers where to start please .
Are the airbags inoperative?
Thanks

Yes, your airbags are most likely dis-abled while this issue is present.
Start by having code(s) read. This will tell you where the issue is. I have owned various Mercedes (including 3 r170s) and this had this come up on mine a couple of times. In my case, it was always a poor connection at a seat connector (so unplugging and cleaning the contacts solved my issue). But you REALLY need to read the code(s) before you dive into this.

hope that helps,
Chris

Thanks Chris
Had the codes read today at my usual indi , (for free!) Came up with 6 different codes covering just about everything.
He cleared the codes and light is out. He suggested we read them again if it comes back to try to identify which function is at fault.
He also said the airbags are functional

hopefully it wont come back. I hope your indi captured the codes for future reference. I always print the results of the "quick test" in SDS as a PDF for future reference each time I hook my startdas tester up to one of my mercedes (this proves useful as these cars often throw codes that don't reappear, but if they do, you want to have a history). If your indi is using a star tester (or similar) he can also view data that was gathered at the time of the fault.

If you had previously done any work that required you disconnect the steering wheel or seat belts or any other SRS sensors (and turned on the key while they were removed), that may have caused a fault code that you will likely NOT see again.

Cheers,
Chris
