Are you talking about the stick or the steering padels? If you are talking about the steering padels, I think both of them if pulled, they upshift, and if pushed they downshift. Try that.

I do not have them myself, so not 100% sure.

This morning, I woke up
Feeling brand new and I jumped up
Feeling my highs, and my lows
In my soul, and my goals
Just to stop smokin, and stop drinkin
And I've been thinkin - I've got my reasons
Just to get (by), just to get (by)
Just to get (by), just to get (by)

I don't have the buttons in the back of my steering wheel either, I drive a 6sp manual but from what I've read, the SLK350 buttons both right and left can downshift and upshift. Are you sure you are doing it right? May some other members with experience will chime in.

Voize 08-04-2006 09:35 AM

yea... my friend told me the left touch shift is suppose to downshift...

Voize 08-04-2006 09:36 AM

I dont want to send it to dealer.... Coz one day without my SLK is killing me....

is it just techincal problem? or really something wrong with it?

I got the steering sports buttons too...can't wait, I'll ask them [mercedes staff] when I get it.

left and right does both up and downshift, I don't think you have a problem but that should be a quick and easy check for your dealer, fixing it might be another story.

Ok Voize, yep, both buttons does down and up, but it depends where you press it, is where you down shift or upshift. I think to the front of the button , away from you down shifts, and closer to you upshifts or vice versa...but yeah, you can just upshift with just one side...really weird...but anyway,... haha i gotta learn how to use it...today I ****ed up and my electric gate hit my front amg bumper, luckily it didn't hit the body paint but my license plate holder...

Voize 08-05-2006 05:42 AM

yea, problem is mine is not shift paddle, but its a touch shift..

quaidorsay 08-05-2006 05:50 AM

yeah thats what im saying haha, im in the same boat as you...

but be careful...you can over rev and screw up your engine/transmission whatever  ...

Over rev is when the engine is on a lower gear or is pulling too many rpm's on a gear, so you must go higer (shift up) or you screw your 'clutch' up. Not sure if our 7g's have special clutches... don't they have two? not sure...anyway, just dont make it rev too much, ... many automatic drivers never get that because the automatic automatically changes the gears...

One more question: do u know bout the "switch to optimum gear" ? tats when u hold the transmission to the left for 1 sec. What does it display in the console?

it simply goes to the lowest possible gear that it can. for example, if you're cruising at 50mph, you hold it left, it will shift in to 3rd or 4th (can't remember which) from 7th.

AFAIK you cannot over-rev the 7G. (someone correct me if I'm wrong)

Easy-SLK 08-05-2006 12:45 PM

You can't over rev the MT either, unless on the downshift, but that would be clumsy. (Ynot would probably do this ?)
When you hold the downshift button in, it will just select the lowest gear possible, its not alway's the optimum. Especially not in the 55 where you have LOADS of torque.

Yep, all the time, best way to test the durability of the engine.
