Tiny holes in sun visor

Tiny holes in sun visor

Why are there tiny holes in the sun visor of the R171 SLK? It defeats the purpose of having a sun visor if the sunlight can get through it!

Thoughts?

My guess is that it would still allow someone to see the stoplight.

Oh.

I usually flip the visor back up, or peek underneath it, if I really want to see the traffic light...

The sun is still annoying...

well, I don't mind the wind with the top down.. I can always put up the top if I don't want the wind.

as for the sun, it doesn't hit my eyes from where the roof is missing... rather it only bothers me in the windshield area, especially in the visor area... I think I will put some cardboard cutouts in there, with double-sided sticky tape...

Holes!

I was actually wondering the exact same thing until just yesterday. It was way too sunny and I couldn't see the stoplight. I flipped down the visor and naturally I'd be trying to peek around it to still see the stoplight. Eventually I got tired of peeking cuz for some reason the light seemed to last forever and when I leaned back on my seat I realized I the stoplight still shone through the holes in the visor. Then I realized that's probably why the entire visor had holes, except for the part in the middle where the mirror was. Such a simple thing (to just poke random holes) yet I think it's brilliant!!

I think that was it's main intention. You can almost look directly at the sun (which you still shouldn't) through the visor and the holes are small enough to block a substantial part. And when you're staring at the stoplight, all you really need is to see colours.

Hmm.. maybe you guys are right?

I tried not to let the sun bother me, and you're right... I can actually look at the sun through the little holes, and it doesn't really bother me.

The only other thing I can think of is maybe they tried to make it sportier??

You know how some people are...you poke a few holes in it and you call it sports version. Peddles, throw a few holes - Sport pedals. Hood, throw a few holes in it - Performance hood. Rotors, drill a few holes - Sport brakes. And the list could go on...

So then sunvisor, stab a few holes - Racing sunvisor!!

I dunno, I think the first reason was more realistic though.

omg ...i will try to explain it again.

If you are driving with the top down and the windows down, AND it is a very windy day, wind will be blowing all inside the cabin of your car.
You pull down your visor to block out the sun, but it flaps back up b/c the wind pushes back up.
Now imagine if your visor had tiny holes to allow wind to pass through the visor, but not against the visor! MB had made the visor extra sturdy with the tiny holes as a safety precaution.
Imagine if you had to drive with the visor to block out the sun. Your visor accidentally flips back up, and you are blinded by the sun. You get in an accident and sue MB.

Ever see a banner with precision cut holes in it? Same concept.

Does this make sense????

This is even more ridiculous... the visor is so sturdy, that I can't imagine the wind blowing it away from its set position.

So far, the traffic light explanation seems to be the best (better than the racing visor and wind-flip visor, anyway)... but then again, I never thought of it because I sit too low for the visor to block my view of the traffic lights.

Would ONLY be the same concept, IF you had an SLK without a windshield.

What makes you think that some how a large wind force would form between the visor in the down position and the windshield (about a 2 inch space) as opposed to the wind force on the back side that would actually be keeping it in position?

Anyway, my vote is the holes were to lower the car weight 0.02 grams, for faster acceleration.

LOL, this reminded me of an episode of the Simpsons where the mob was trying to kill Homer. He was looking at a car with the saleguy and the mob hitman was taking shots at him but missed and hit the hood of the car several times. Homer said hey wait, theres holes in the hood. The sales guy said oh those are speed holes, makes the car go faster. Homer said oohhh.... He went home and got a pickaxe and starting puting holes in the hood of his car when Ned came over and said Homer what are you doing?! Homer said putting speed holes in the hood, makes it go faster.

We all laugh, but years ago when the Hondo S2000 was first coming out, I was interested and reading everything.

Their marketing literature actually made a point (and big deal) about the accelerator pedal being drilled to save weight! I kidunot.

Yeah that Simpson's episode was funny. That's what I think about all the time when I see things that are drilled or perforated!

Clearly it's the weight reduction! Our pedals have holes too!
