You can drive in winter (as is snow), but only with with winter tires (not all season, or M+S), I drove my 06 for a couple of months last winter with Dunlop M3's on 17" rims and did not have any problems. I didn't want to drive in the snow but I only had one car at that time and had no choice.

Depending on how much winter/snow driving you plan on you may consider a second car, if you put on AMG rims, plus good winter wheels plan on spending around $2k, less if you buy non-amg rims. A winter beater can probably be had for $4 or $5k.

Snow Worrys Mate

I have 4 Blizzak LM-25's on my SLK55 and they kickass in the snow & cold. I use my stock AMG wheels and have 225's all around which is no problem for the 8.5" rear wheels. I am very impressed by their traction. Highly recommended!

I'm in Toronto Canada, so we know all about snow ! I got a set of pre-owned AMG 5 spoke rims with the Blizzak LM25s. They are awesome. They don't look quite as nice as my stock 18" rims, but not bad for a winter setup. They were only $850 !

So this may a stupid question for this group but what are your thoughts about your slk55's good- bad why did you pick this car over something else I have an 07 bmw 550 test drove the 55 yesterday seems a little cramped and not much storage, this would be my daily driver, and not a young buck I'm 54 so don't want to make a mistake. It's a very nice car just want some owner feedback.

My last few cars were 97 BMW M3, 99 BMW MZ3, 2000 BMW M5, 2003 Ininiti G35, now my 2006 SLK55. The 55 is by far the most fun and most powerful of the bunch. Yes the M5 had 400 HP and it would be a close second for thrill value, but because of the SLK's size, the experience is much more thrilling. I found the SLK roomier than the MZ3, but I obviously lost some space compared to the other cars ... with the top up I characterize it as cozy rather than cramped, and its a dream once the top is down ! Crazy fast, amazing handling, and tons of compliments from fellow drivers !

I have a 04 BMW 545, 04 GTI. 07 SLK55, and my wife has a Lexus 4wheel drive thing. And if I had to choose 1 car to keep. I'd pick the 545 less the run flat tires. I have a family of 4 and the bimmer is safe, comfortable, handles very well and fast. So when we go out in the bimmer, I feel my family is well protected in the car, and I can enjoy the driving and have a little bit of fun if I want to. The SLK55 is alot of fun to drive and it sounds wonderful, makes me feel like I'm 15 again - but it's not a practical daily commuter car - it attracts too much attention, not as comfy....

You had a bad experience with the dealership. Do you have another dealership to goto? Don't discount the car when the dealership is not meeting your needs. BTW, we (me and my wife) find Lexus has the absolute best warranty and service. In fact my wife won't buy anything else except a Lexus because of her experience with the service department.

You are right about lexus I've had a few of those but reaaly not a drivers car. The 550 is a great car and I may still keep it and travel to find a dealer who will take care of me. But since having this car Nov 06 it has been in for service issues ( software updates and other minor things) but I need a loaner and the dealer banned me from loaner car because I kept it a day longer even though I had a great excuse ( my dad was rushed to the hospital) they now won't give me a loaner. When I found this out I lost it and told the service manager to go Fu--k himself that's how pissed I was, anyway that's where I'm at. I don't have any kids to worry about I just don't want to make a mistake

What are you looking for in a daily driver? I think that's the most important question to answer before you decide on the car. I've looked at almost everything throughout the price range of the SLK55 and ultimately decided on it because it's everything I want. I'm stuck in a 2-seat phase, I miss my old convertible, I want lots of power/sport, but I also want luxury. And, in my opinion, there's nothing out there that offers all of that any better than the SLK55, especially in a hard-top convertible. But, I'm also 30 years younger...

Now, that being said...if you're concerned about winter and the fact that it's a smaller car, you might want to consider the Audi RS4 or the new BMW M3. The RS4 offers 420hp in a 4-seater with crisp handling and AWD. If you don't have to rush to get something, you might also want to wait at least until BMW officially announces the specs on the new M3, because expectations are that with a V8 and 400+hp it's going to give anything in this class a run for it's money.

Winter driving

Yes, I drive my SLK 55 with the 050 Performance package in the snow and ice all the time. Well, not if the roads are heavily salted and sanded. But most of the time the roads around here are cold but dry. I put Pirelli Wintersports (from Tire Rack) on a new set of AMG wheels I bought off ebay. They are true performance winter tires. No problem in light snow, slush, cold and wet, or even icy patches. I wouldn't recommend driuving in deeper snow because of the low clearance.

i have another car I could drive and do drive when it is really nasty. But I didn't buy my 55 to hide it away in the garage all winter!! It is too much fun for that!

You could be correct, I donno. I have no experience with the tires you mentioned and besides, I had to settle for what was available and could be fitted to my wheels. Oh well, it's only a car afterall.
