Carbon fiber hood for SLK r171

http://www.visracing.com/newcatalog/...263/index.html

Anyone know how the quality and fitment is on this hood? Not that bad of a price...

dsb 08-04-2008 10:46 AM

First time I've seen a CF hood for the SLK. Yes, the price is quite good. I don't think it would look good on my car... perhaps on a white or silver SLK instead. Problem is I've seen many CF hoods that look bad. I don't know if I've ever seen a good looking one. Now, the M3 roof... that looks great.

My biggest worry would be the fitment what would you do if you go it? Leave the CF all completely showing? Paint of some? Paint over all?

hrmm

I will let you know after I get it.

VIS usually have good fitment on Janpnese car, but I am not sure for European cars!!

I think I will ... I'm waiting for the diffuser first though. I'd probably paint over the CF though.

I need to repaint my front bumper from all the rock chips already. The best timing would be to get CF front lip and repaint the front bumper and get the hood. Have it all done at the same time.

Sounds like a good plan keep me updated on how everything turns out with the hood and all!

The stock hood is pretty light already, I don't think you'll have significant weight savings. This is more of a "visual" mod than performance mod IMO, it will look awesome with other euroteck carbon parts :D

stock hood

I believe is steel ... not even aluminum.

lee7758 08-04-2008 09:00 PM

NO ! I am sure the stock hood is aluminum!!

Stock hood weighs only about 45lbs, it must be aluminum. You might get like 20lbs weight reduction with carbon hood... which is very minor and hardly worth it IMO

Gents, the hood is steel, not Aluminum.

SLK55R 08-04-2008 10:55 PM

steel

Yeah I remember testing with a magnet ... was that with you Matt?

Yes - one of the times you came by my house. It's just a simple test for metalurgy confirmation. See ya.:)

fredfromny 08-05-2008 06:56 AM

The hood is steel.

I'd stay away from VIS hoods, fitment is poor on the Japanese models, I'd seen one for a 2001 Eclipse, and the hood wasn't flush.

drakon 08-06-2008 02:47 PM

anyone interested in a perfect fit fiberglass hood? Since the goal is to save weight not to show off the carbon fiber this is a better option. what would you guys pay for one? i'm having a mold of my hood being made right now, it would make sense to make some extra pieces.

imducati 08-06-2008 04:15 PM

I'd pay $500 for a fiberglass hood if it saved 20 lbs.

imducati 08-11-2008 02:38 PM

after seeing all your wide body panels, I'll buy them all.

Hey! did i meet you at the show? or did you just see pictures?

i haven't put up the event pictures yet, but you can see the development pictures at rexaccelero.com

We will be selling the entire kit starting in September. The hood and spoiler is in progress ATM. We may be offering the rear diffusor, front lip, and a new spoiler as a separate kit if we have enough demand. We have parts of a mold of the original hood, but that's on the back burner while my current hood gets done.

I'm not sure how the sponsor registration works here, so i haven't posted details here yet, but i'll be getting in touch with them soon.
