HOW MUCH IS A SERVICE ON A SLR

HOW MUCH IS A SERVICE ON A SLR. I was told that a A service is about 4,000 to 5,500 about 25 hours is that RIGHT a B service is about 7,500 to 8,500 about 33 hours. and at 4 years it could be as much as 15,000 to 20,000 50-60 hours and that is just for spark plugs and fuel filter + service. and it will take about 3 weeks to do. thay say that thay have to remove the engine and transmission for the spark plugs and the gas tank to replace the fuel filter. what the HELL am i missing anything. why so much

gqmagic 11-22-2008 10:57 PM

If you can pay $500k for a car the service $$ should'nt be of any concern:nix:

its only 1%-2% of the price.

While I agree with your logic...it still would be a crime to overcharge just because the car costs so much. I do not believe the SLR is that far ahead of the curve of a normal AMG to where service would be 10 times the amount.

I asked this question to the mechanics at the HWA racing division when I was in Affalterbach. They explained the motor never comes out of the car for any service...they remove the entire nose of the car including the radiator to service it.

iluvmys65amg 11-23-2008 01:25 PM

Believe it or not...The service isn't that bad for the SLR.

Knock on wood...I havent had any major problems with mine, though its still on warranty if anything should go wrong. :y

AMGC43C55 11-23-2008 09:20 PM

thay recoment to replace the spark plugs at 4 years and or 60,000 miles and the engine has to come out to do that. talked to a SLR master cerified tech and he sead that if any work has to be done to the engine it has to come out. i asked if that will be someing that i can do at home on a weekend the tech just :rolf:. the tech the only thing you could to check the oil and tire psi.

CharlestonN 12-17-2008 08:06 PM

Iv heard that a full brake job is a bit pricey

BMWRACER 12-18-2008 01:10 AM

Service is stupid money. It's like they see you coming.1st service on the 722 was around 5k.
i had rear rotors and pads replaced under warranty.Guess how much? 35k in parts before labour and taxes. Absolute theft

Yeah, i heard a full brake job was around $40k and apparently when you stop quickly enough the rotors catch a fire, not sure if that has been remedied on later versions though

According to Mercedes, the brakes should never have to be replaced on the SLR. Also, it may sound pricey for service, but you guys should try servicing a Ferrari to the tune of about $10k.

AMGC43C55 12-22-2008 09:42 PM

you have to pay to play. and what is $20,000 for spark plugs and service and may be brakes.:rolf:

pmb600 12-22-2008 10:05 PM

I think most people don't mind paying for something if there is value in it, but what are they doing for these several thousand dollars?

I agree that just because the car costs a lot doesn't mean it should cost a ton to service UNLESS there is a real reason.

That is just a heart stopping amount of money. I wonder what the actual mark-up is on those parts?

l3iGD 12-25-2008 11:59 PM

Can a used SLR be had for under $200k or right at this price point?

Quicktwinturbo 12-26-2008 12:40 AM

Is it true that if you purchase one in Germany, u'll get a free brake replacement coupons among with other service coupons? I told my friend thats highly doubtful... but he said that is the FACT..

Nope. I posted the auction #'s for a 2005 SLR in another thread and I believe the cheapest was $219k or $232....I can't remember.

On another note, that is really robbery that it costs that much to service these cars. I tend to think that anyone who bought one can certainly afford it but what I wonder is are the parts and labor actually that much more expensive or are dealers just taking owner to the cleaner cause they can??? An oil change is and oil change..yes or no?

All of these quotes are, for the most part, true. Anything in particular you want to know about the services? :)

Oxygen 01-31-2009 03:53 PM

SLR Calipers, Rotors and Pads for Front and Rear are about $80,000 in parts.

The front rotors are $18,000/EACH and the rears are $16,000/EACH.

The reason why its so much money is because its labor intensive. I've done services on these cars. Have not done a major service on one yet, but the motor does have to come out to do spark plugs, or any components on top of the motor. I have pulled the fuel tanks on one and its about 9 hours of work. The under body has over 140 bolts that hold the under paneling in place, they are all bolted into the carbon fiber body so no power or air tools allowed. And all have to be torqued because the under body is part on the vehicles frame structure.

Just an oil change alone will easily take 2-3 hours.

I've pulled an engine on one. I've also replaced an evaporator on another. Can't say which job I disliked more. Both my hands looked like they had been through a meat grinder when I was finished with each job. It's insane how little room there is anywhere on that vehicle.
