SLR Styling. Do you like it?

After seeing pictures a few SLR pictures from South Africa ... I was warming up to the front end styling. And I really liked the rear tail light styling.

Then I read the Ford / McLaren review posted here ... which panned the styling.

Harsh? or a popular opinion? A quotation from the author:

"I doubt anyone would call the new SLR a pretty car. The proboscis is particularly inelegant, and sadly, according to spy photos and informed speculation, it will infect subsequent Mercedes models like the up-coming SLK roadster.

The droopy aspect of the rear end looks like a particularly sad grouper."

What are you kiddin' me?

How can anyone NOT like Mercedes' flagship sportscar?

And before you all reply with its hideous, and all, just test drive one first

Test driving has nothing to do with the styling of the car.

My problem with this car is that it is not proportionate at all. The hood on this car is too long and the design is too conservative for an all out racer. Also, the front end resembles too much of the much cheaper and common SL. For this price, I's rather be in a much more exotic looking car. And I even hate the tail lights. They should have kept the original vision tail lights. Take away the fish fins and this car looks like a corvette.

Yup, the 2000 orders and deposits that Mercedes have in their accounts are all from people who find it "hideous"

Again, you continue to change the subject. I said that that I had issues with the design, in which you bring up the fact that 2000 people have placed orders; which does not influence MY opinion of the car or have anything to do with my opinion. I can't justify spending this much money on a car that doesn't have the exotic appeal and bruteness of a Ferrari of Lambo. The SLR is too subdued. Sure, there will be people who want it, simply because its the latest and greatest MB, but that does not enhance the appearance of the car.

Since the theme of this thread seems to be how to change the subject, I am willing to say that those same 2000 anxious customers will be let down, just like those with the SL55, because the performance/experience of the SLR will fall short of the hyped due to the fact that MB can't/doesn't make true racing cars.

What's worst of all, is that this $200K "monster" looks like a $40k All-American Corvette.

I will be glad to test drive it before I say. Just tell me where I can do that..... But I like it and if I had the money I would buy one.

This car will eat a corvette.

The credit goes to Bilal, not me... The SLR, design wise, is a disappointment, at best.

Pretty weak response :p

The SLR styling is drop dead georgous (at its worst) very very few people do not appreciate the styling ie BMW owners.

Its not like the Enzo which gains its beauty because of the prancing horse badge, the SLR is really beatiful and has gained the respect of many car enthusiats.

I saw a Black one and a Silver one at the Canadian International Autoshow and it looks better in person then looking at the pictures.

I'd have to agree with internet_mafia here. The car's proportions is too similar to the Corvette, which isn't very appealing to me. The SLR's appearance come nowhere near the exotics in its range, such as the Mucielago.

It is beautiful no doubt, but not exotic-league beautiful.

Exactly. The SLR is a technological masterpeice, but its not the kind of car you would expect to see on an exotic car poster/calendar. And for it to cost this much, that is a disappointment.

In person the turbine wheels look quite nice!
Not nearly as vulgar as they do in pictures.

I still prefer the classic 5 spoke wheels they come with though.

SLR is Georgous! Anyone here that stands by one in person would bust a nut. Watch, I know it.

I think it is a good looking car, no doubt, but I would not put it in the league (style wise) as a Carrera GT or Murceilago. Stylewise, the SL55 is a far better looking car than the SLR.

pardon my french, but the design is quintessential sports car: long hood, short rear overhang. same reason i love the maranello so much. and the sideview posted make it look like it should be the next bond car. but then i wouldnt complain if the next bond car were an aston.

I agree that for this kind of money, it should reflect a more exotic look. The Ferrari Enzo, for example, LOOKS like its worth every penny, regardless of how it drives.

Thats pretty funny seeing as how most people HATED the Enzo when it first came out. Of course when the Ferrari badge was evident most people changed their minds.

I love Ferrari I love Porsche I love lamborghini I love Pagani, and I love Mercedes-Benz.

Overall, the mercedes fits the needs in the real world. Like for example you want to go to work but in a fast and inconspicuous state (relatively), the SLR is unmatched, of course you could take an Enzo, or a Pagani or even a CGT, but what if it breaks down? what if someone dings it? what if...?

Seriously, what can replace the thrill of taking a Ferrari/lambo or Porsche on a Sunday tour of the country? Nothing, this is why there are different strokes for different folks, there is no point saying one is better than the other, thats childs play.

Because when it comes to talking SUPERCARS, from the F40 to the SLR, no one is better than the other...

What are you talking about? This is not an issue of reliability and no one is ranking any of the cars you mentioned. The sentiment among the recent posts is that the SLR should have more of an exotic look *like* the Ferrari's and Lambo's. MB's biggest mistake is that they try to satisfy everyone's needs, which results in falling short of everyone's expectations. MB refuses to produce cars whose design compromises nothing, like the Murcielago or Enzo. If this is the best MB can do, then they should get out of the supercar business. Like most of MB recent designs, the SLR is not the kind of car that you can spot a mile away without confusing with something else, like a corvette.
